Chapter 3

We were listening on the phone. The professors were talking about elections. We were waiting to hear what JD sir will say.

"Hey enna JD sir ethuvum pesa mattinguraru?" I asked
(Hey why isn't JD sir not saying anything?)

"Amala." someone agreed
(Right)

"Ei, avar thaan oru nalla pointtukkaha wait pannuvaru." Sri said
(Hey he is probably waiting for a good point)

"Sir ethukkum JD oda opinion ah kettrunga sir." a professor said
(Sir ask for JD's opinion as well)

"Mmm, JD unga opinion ah sollunga." the prinicipal said
(Mmm, JD give your opinion on this)

"Unga opinion enna? JD? " the principal asked once again
(What is your opinion? JD?)

"Nethu enna kilamai?" Someone asked
(What day was it yesterday?)

"Viyaalakilamai." Sri said
(Thursday)

"Dei viayaalakilamai avarukku leave uh da." someone shouted
(Dei, he is off work on Thurdays!)

"Appo nethu mulukka kudichiruppadra! Dei dei dei! Vangada!" I shouted running
(Then he must drunk all day yesterday! Dei dei dei! Come quick!)

"Paaththu pongada!" someone shouted
(Be careful!)

We ran to the meeting hall

"Sir sir! Emergency sir!" I shouted holding my phone up in the air

"Dei ungazhukku inga enna velai?" principal asked
(Dei why are you here? What are you doing?)

"Sorry, sir, Rosi maam oda husband, vandila roadla poittu irukkum pothu keela vilunthu accident aagiduchaam. Sir phone mattum kuduthudren sir." I said running to Rosi maam.
(Sorry sir, it's an emergency, Rosi maam's husband got into an accident. I'll just give the phone and leave)

I gave the phone to her and pinched JD sir on the thigh

"Sir election venamnu sollranga sir, ennanu konjam kelunga, nalla point ah sollunga sir." I said and apologised and left
(Sir they are talking about how they don't want elections, pls sir say something, say good points haan?)

In the meeting:

"JD election pathi unga opinion enna?" principal asked sir again
(JD what is your opinion on elections?)

"Ennana? Elections nadakkanum." JD sir said
(What do you mean? Elections should happen!)

"Hm. Nenaichen." principal said under his breath
(Hm. I knew.)

"Ipdi thaan sir pesittu irupparu. College la elections nu sollittomna ella pasangalum athe nenaippula iruppanga. Oruthanum padikkavum maattaan, classukkum vara maattaan." a professor said
(He will only say things like this. If we announce that elections are happening, everyone student will onky think about that. They won't come to come lessons, let alone study.)

"Correct. Elections ah students conduct panni, ennatha kaththukka poranga sir? Collegekulla ethukku sir politics?" another professor said
(Correct. What will students learn from conducting elections? Why have politics in college?)

"Sir watch it sir. Polictics na enna sir?" JD sir asked him
(Sir watch it sir, what is politics?)

"Sir naan ungazhoda pesula." the other professor said
(Sir I am not talking with you)

"Apdiya, aana naan virupa padren. Itho varen." JD sir said
(Oh really, but I want to. Here I come)

"Sir politics na, service nu avangazhukku theriyanum. College padikkum pothe, elections, leadership, itha pathila therinjukitta thaan state uh, central election pathi oru awareness varum. College padikkura maanavarkal thaan first time voters. Avana sariya sinthikka vitta thaan adatha thalaimuraikku nalla thalaivan kidaippan. Oru nalla thalaivan uruvaahurathukkum, illa oru nalla thalaivana choose pandrathukkahavumana oru pakkavam varum. Innum orutha-" he was cut off by another professor
(Sir they need to know that politics is a service. When studying in college, knowing about elections and leadership is important. If they know this then they will have awareness on state and central elections. College students are first time voters. If you let them think well, then you will have a good leader for the next generation. They will be able to become good leaders or choose good leaders - you need skills for that. Still if on-)

"Sir, kanda idaththula poster ottu vaanunga, ella sivaththulayum ezhuthu vaanunga, aprom en sivaru un sivarunu adichchupanunga." another professor jumped in
(Sir they put poster on randam places and write on walls, then fight about whose wall it is)

"Yen ithellam veliya irukkuravanga pandrathillayaa? Utkarunga sir." JD sir asked him
(Why don't people outside do this? Sit down sir)

"Ithellam pothuva vaara problems thaane athukkaha naatuleyye elections venamnu solla mudiyuma? Namma oorla enna poster, banner, kalacharam irukka thaan seiyum. Pasangalukku banner ottanum, vaikkanumnu theriyonama iruntha inga election nadakkanum, appo thaan veliya poi correct ah iruppan. Politicsna ennanu studentsukku theriyanum." JD sir continued
(This happens all the time right but just because it happens we can't say we don't want elections. We have the culture of sticking banners and posters everywhere in our place. If you want students to know about where to stick and put posters, elections should happen. Students should know what politics are)

"Sari. Neenga sollrathu sarinu vachchukkuvom. Students ethavathu vettu kothula irangittangana, collegukku ethachum damage aachuna, yaar poruppu?" principal asked him
(Ok fine, let's say your right. But what if students start fighting, the college is damaged. Who is responsible for that?)

"Sir apdillam ethuvum nadukkaathu sir." JD sir assured him
(Sir nothing like that would happen)

"Meeri nadantha college ah vittu poiduvingala? Resign panniduvingalo?" principal asked him
(What if it does happen? Will you leave the college? Will you resign?)

"Naduntha paappom." JD sir replied
(If something like that does happen, we will see)

"Appo sari, neengale munnukku ninnu intha elections ah naduththi kaattunga. Aana ethachum problem vantha, intha college ah vitte poiddrennu oru letter ah ezhuthi kudunga." principal said
(Ok do one thing, stand forward and conduct the elections. Also write a letter with your sign saying if anything goes down with the elections you will leave the college)

With that JD signed the paper and came.

"Vara June maasam 25 ahm thihathi elections!" he said and we all cheered
(Next month, on 25th of June, elections will be held)

Soon we started election campaigns.
