Vi had gone back to Caitlyn's around noon the next day. She actually used the door this time and didn't sneak into her room like a criminal. She felt the need to change clothes and she wasn't even in the mood to drink like she had been. Thankfully, when she got to the palace, Mr. Kiramman was sitting on the front steps, puffing on a cigar.
"I thought those were bad for you," Vi teased.
Mr. Kiramman looked up at her then back down at the cigar, "They are," he said, taking another hit, "I'm supposed to tell my patients that though."
"You're not being a good influence on them then, are you?"
"They don't have to know what I do in the comfort of my own home. Caitlyn is in the kitchen eating breakfast."
"Breakfast? It's lunch now."
"She's been sleeping a lot since she returned home. It is good for her. That girl, she worries herself just as much as her mother does."
Then the smell of the cigar finally hit Vi's nostrils. It made her think of Vander and his smoking habits. How the smell filled the bar at night as they all gathered around the pool table and he sat back laughing at them as they argued about who won.
"Is something wrong?" Mr. Kiramman asked.
"Nothing, the smell," Vi said, shaking her head.
"Oh, is it bad? I could put it out-"
"No. Someone I used to know smoked every hour on the hour and it smells the exact same." The man looked at her for a moment, "Sorry."
"It's quite all right. And before you go in there, it is important for you to know that you're welcome. Cassandra may have not entirely liked the idea of a Zaunite in her home, but I don't mind. You've helped my daughter a lot these days."
Vi just nodded and walked inside. She looked around at the part of the house she had really seen. But where was the kitchen? There was so much to the place, she had lost track of where she was actually going. She walked down the main hallway until she heard something sizzling. She went into the kitchen to see Caitlyn using one arm to cook something and the other on one of the crutches to keep herself stable.
"Aren't you supposed to have both of them?" Vi asked.
"Yes, but I wanted to make my own breakfast as I usually do," Caitlyn said. She then made a short glance in Vi's direction, "Did you use the front door this time?"
"You'd be proud."
"I am proud. It's a lot easier than using the window, right?"
"I got a little distracted by your dad's cigar, but yeah, it was nice."
"I'm surprised he hasn't been smoking them indoors. Then again, I hear my mother bitching at me as well sometimes."
Vi let out a dramatic gasp, "Did Caitlyn Kiramman just say a cuss word?"
Caitlyn rolled her eyes and placed the pan on the stove, "Shut up, I say them all the time, you just don't hear it." She leaned against the counter as the food continued to sizzle.
"You know I had to give you shit for it. What are you making anyway?"
"Just some eggs. I made enough for two, you want some?"
"I didn't know you could cook."
"You didn't think I cooked for myself?" Vi nonchalantly looked around. Caitlyn chuckled a bit, "I can make you a plate."
"It's your food."
"And now half of it's yours. Sit."
Vi sat down on one of the barstools at the island counter. As Caitlyn prepared their plates, she admired the kitchen. It was so clean and so perfect and so... Piltoverish. It was still nice though. There were small house plants on the counters and little pictures on the walls. She was pretty sure if Caitlyn didn't live here, there would probably be no kind of decorations at all. The plate of eggs was pushed in front of her along with a small cup of water. Caitlyn's plate was pushed next to it.
"I see you're getting around with that leg, huh?" Vi asked as Caitlyn sat on the barstool next to her.
"I was in sports in school," Caitlyn said, propping her crutches on the island, "I've broken a leg before. Perhaps not as major as this time, but I know how to get around on crutches." They both began to eat their eggs.
"What about the stairs?"
Caitlyn held her hand over her mouth before she spoke, "I have my own way of getting up the stairs."
"What do you do? Sit on the bottom step and scoot yourself up?"
"That's exactly what I do."
Based off the first small bite of eggs Vi took, Caitlyn made a good first impression. It didn't even need salt and it was the perfect texture. Vi remembered eggs being the only good thing they gave them in prison. Even if they were cold and wet with no salt, it was better than the other shit they gave them.
"This is actually really good," Vi told her.
"I told you I know how to make my own food," Caitlyn said, taking a sip of her tea.
"You should teach Stillwater how to make these."
"I tried teaching Jayce. No one can make them like I can."
Vi chuckled, "How your leg doing?"
"Like it's broken."
"Okay, smart ass, I mean your pain levels. It's not hurting to bad today is it?"
"No. Why? Are you worried about me?"
The Zaunite shrugged her shoulders, "It looked serious. You also have a shit ton of stairs in this house."
"It was here before I was. I took no part in the construction of it, speak to my father. I used to have knee problems as a kid and no matter how much I complained, I had to get over it."
"What is it with Piltover and stairs?"
"I'm not exactly sure." Caitlyn finished her eggs and went to get up before Vi grabbed her arm.
"I'll do it," she said, taking the plate to the sink, "You're taking your broken leg a little too well."
"I haven't lost my ability to function, Vi. I can do things myself. Such as taking my own plate to the sink."
"Even if you can, it doesn't mean you should."
Caitlyn slid off the barstool, "I promise you, I'm-" before she could finish her sentence, she lost her balance reaching for the crutches and nearly fell. Vi quickly caught her like she had that day she had tripped down the stairs at the Firelight tree. Caitlyn leaned back against the island counter and they two girls held their stare.
"You sure about that?" Vi asked, holding her index finger beneath Caitlyn's chin. The Topsider caught her breath. Vi looked down, seeing her chest rising and falling as she panted. She looked back into Caitlyn's blue eyes before glancing down at her lips, "You should go back upstairs and rest your leg."
"What if I don't?" Caitlyn asked, her sweaty palms gripping the counter. Vi still had her muscular arm wrapped around Caitlyn's waist from where she caught her. Her free hand cupped her face as the space closed in between them. The brawler's hand moved underneath Caitlyn's bed leg and propped it up on her hip.
They pulled away, catching their breath, "You wouldn't mind if I carried you, would you?" Vi asked. Caitlyn just giggled, wrapping her arms around Vi's neck.
