Why?

Percy's POV:

"Annabeth!" I yelled as I shoved my way through the crowd in the hallway, pushing past the group of girls wearing BabyGAP skirts. How do they find the time to cake their face with makeup like that?

She glanced back at me once, then started speed walking away. I attempted to push past the hallway crowd, but by the time I got the jocks off my back she was nowhere to be seen. I felt the stab of hurt go through my chest- why was she avoiding me? What did I do to her?

The kiss, you idiot. Why did you rush things so fast? Now she probably thinks you're one of those thick-headed players that grabs every chance he sees, my brain responded.

But she wanted the kiss just as much as I did! I argued back.

Did she, though? Did you ask her if she wanted it? DID you?

I groaned, putting my hand on my head and tugging at my hair. It was my fault- why had I rushed things? Why couldn't I have waited? Everything about her just drove me crazy- that hair, those eyes, that display of attitude I saw on the bus the other day- it was like a drug, the most intoxicating drug. And now, because of one stupid mistake, I was going to lose the most perfect girl I've ever met?

No. No, I wouldn't. I was going to make her tell me what happened, and I would beg for forgiveness if I had to. I was willing to do anything for her. I will show her that I can be what she needs, that I'm perfect for her. I set off, determined to find her. This school was hella big, but given the mood I was in even the walls were likely to back off and show me the way to her.

I saw a flash of blond hair, and I ran after it- and ran into a deserted corridor, right in front of the person I totally wanted to see the most right now.

(Note the sarcasm.)

"And what do you want, Jackson?" sneered that little piece of scum, Luke Castellan. I was pleased to see that his nose had completely swollen, and his throat had several black and blue marks from where I'd grabbed him yesterday.

Rage coursed through me, turning my vision red. He was the reason. Her bruises, her scars, the way she was constantly looking around, fear evident in her eyes. It was because of him. Luke Callestan had single-handedly made Annabeth's life hell. How had nobody seen it? How could everybody ignore all the obvious signs?

"I won't hesitate to punch you again, Castellan." I punched his jaw with all my strength. I heard the noise as his jaw broke, which satisfied me to the point where I can't explain. I bought my first back for another punch, but Luke held up a hand to stop me.

"You want to be careful, Jackson... wouldn't want anything to happen to your pretty blonde, now, would you?" he sneered, using a hanky to cover the bleeding side of his face.

I growled, an inhuman sound. I lunged at Castellan, grabbing his collar and throwing him to the ground. I pinned him to the ground and grabbed his throat. "Where-is-Annabeth?" I hissed.

Suddenly, someone cried out, "Percy, help!" I looked up, and saw Annabeth struggling in the grasp of one of Luke's buddies. I got up off Luke and ran as fast as I could towards her, reaching out to grab her. Luke's buddy led me all the way to the parking lot, then tossed her into a van and started the engine. Luke walked in front of me and came to face me, and smirked. "Can't say I didn't warn you, Jackson."

I lunged for Luke, and one of his buddies grabbed his arm and pulled him into the van. The van sped off, and I was left standing there. Reality persisted at me, but I refused to accept it. Annabeth couldn't be gone. She was still here. She wasn't gone.

I looked up and yelled at loud as I could. I stayed there for a long, long time.

No point in mourning, boss, my brain finally said. You'd better do something about it.

I stood up, hollow from the inside. My anger hardened into steely resolve. I was gonna make Luke wish he'd never been born, and I was gonna get my girl.

I rushed past the halls of Liberty, straight to my locker, and grabbed my bag. A note fell out from inside it. I picked it up, and saw writing I immediately recognized. Annabeth's.

I'm sorry.
