I Love You

Annabeth's POV:

We walked behind the school, into the forest, our feet falling into rhythm beside each other as we walked comfortably, enjoying the silence and each other's presence. I would glance at him every once in a while, and see his black messy hair effortlessly pushed back and his sea green eyes, and my heart would throb. He was good-looking without even trying. It wasn't fair.

We kept walking through the forest, the trees nearly blocking out the sun as distant animal cries were heard from the distance. A sudden thought occurred to me and I stopped in my tracks.

"Wait, you didn't bring me here to murder me, did you?"

He walked up to me and smirked. "Why would you think that?"

"Because... it's the perfect setting. You know, where they go out for a walk and he leads her out into the middle of the forest and then-"

He rolled his eyes and nudged my shoulder. My thoughts immediately went blank as electric sparks shot through me at his slightest touch. I blushed a deep red, and determinedly avoided his piercing gaze.

"You read too much." Is all he said before resuming to walk ahead. I scowled at his back then rushed to catch up to him. Damn you and your long legs, Percy.

After a few more minutes, we made it to the clifftop, Percy relaxed and me huffing and puffing due to having to jog to catch up to him. I took in our surroundings, and looked at Percy with wide eyes. "Oh gods, are you going to push me off the cliff? I would've preferred the forest-"

He suddenly pushed me forward, and my feet almost slipped over the cliff's edge, before he quickly grabbed me and pulled me back, laughing at the look on my face.

"You IDIOT!" I screamed, slapping his hand away from my arm and quickly moving away from him.

He raised his hands in defence. "I wasn't gonna let you fall-"

"What if you didn't catch my arm?" I seethed angrily.

Suddenly, he had closed the distance between us with a few quick strides. He then pulled me into him, and I gasped. 

He bent down and whispered in my ear, "I would follow you to the afterlife, and get you back. I would always find a way. I would never let anyone lay a hand on you, and I would always catch you, no matter how suddenly you trip and fall."

My breath caught as my cheeks turned crimson. What was he doing to me?

He looked down at me. "I love you, Annabeth."

My heart stopped.

He loved me?

Like, love love?

I closed my eyes. This couldn't be real. I opened them again, and saw Percy in front of me, his beautiful green eyes staring into mine, filled with hope.

"I-I love you, too." I breathed out.

"Wait, what?" Percy asked, shocked. "Y-you do?"

I nodded slowly. His eyes filled with happiness. 

Then his smile suddenly dropped.

"What?" I demanded.

"Annabeth, I don't want to rush you into anything. I'm always ready, but you... especially after everything that happened..."

I shook my head slowly. "Percy... there was a time when I was unsure, too. I didn't know what was best for me. In fact, I still don't. But all I know is that I want this. I desperately need it. So, please..."

He looked at me, his eyes filled with seriousness. "Are you sure?"

I took a deep breath. He noticed my hesitation.

"Annabeth, I swear, I love you more than anything. I'll be whatever kind of partner you want me to be. I'll always be there for you, no matter what. And, I'm here with you, every step of the way. You won't regret it. Just give me a chance," he whispered. 

And the funny thing was, I believed him.

I leaned in closer, and crashed my lips onto his.
