The night was restless. My thoughts spiraled endlessly, dragging me deeper into the abyss of my past. As I drove through the deserted streets, the city lights blurred by my speed, I couldn’t shake the sense that everything I thought I knew was built on lies.

Catherine Blackwood, my real mother. Her name echoed in my mind, but her face remained a mystery. I could barely remember her—just fragments of a smile, the warmth of her embrace, the gentle hum of a lullaby. But those memories were fleeting, overshadowed by the cold reality that followed her death.

My father’s decision to marry Vivian Blackwood had never made sense to me. Why would he, a man who had been so deeply in love with Catherine, remarry so soon after her death? What had compelled him to bring Vivian into our lives? These questions had haunted me for years, but now, with the new revelations about my father’s death, they took on a darker significance.

Vivian was not just a stepmother who had taken over our lives—she was a woman of secrets, of hidden motives, and I was beginning to suspect that her role in my father’s life, and his death, was far more sinister than I had ever imagined.

I needed to find Scarlett, to talk to her, to make her understand why I had been so distant, so consumed by my own demons. But every attempt to reach her had been met with silence. I had called her repeatedly, only to be met with voicemail. I even tried reaching out to some of her friends at work, but they were tight-lipped, either out of loyalty to Scarlett or fear of me.

I understood why she was avoiding me—I had hurt her, pushed her away when all she had wanted was to be close to me. But now, with everything spiraling out of control, I needed her more than ever. She was the only person who could ground me, who could make sense of the chaos that was threatening to consume me.

But before I could reach her, I needed answers. And those answers lay in the past, buried beneath layers of deceit and manipulation. I had to unravel the truth about my father’s death, about Vivian, and about the connection between my parents—a connection that had been shrouded in mystery for far too long.

My mind drifted back to the last few weeks before my father’s death. He had been distant, preoccupied with something that he had never shared with me. I remembered the tension in the house, the way he had locked himself away in his study, working late into the night. He had been researching something, digging into something that had clearly disturbed him.

I remembered the argument between my father and Vivian, the one I had overheard from the hallway. They had been arguing about something important, something that had clearly put my father on edge. At the time, I hadn’t understood the significance, but now, with everything I had learned, I was beginning to see the pieces of the puzzle fall into place.

Vivian had been involved in something—something that my father had discovered. And whatever it was, it had been dangerous enough to get him killed. The official story had been that my father’s death was an accident, but I was beginning to suspect that it had been anything but.

The memory of that overheard conversation came rushing back to me. Vivian had said something that had struck me as odd at the time, but I had been too young to fully grasp its meaning. “She’s not going to be a problem,” Vivian had said, her voice cold and dismissive. “I’ve made sure of that. And as for Alexander, he’ll be exactly where we want him.”

At the time, I had assumed she was talking about some business matter, something related to the company. But now, as I replayed that memory in my mind, I realized that she might have been talking about my mother—Catherine—and about me.

Had my mother’s death been an accident, or had it been orchestrated by Vivian? The thought sent a chill down my spine. If Vivian had been behind both of my parents’ deaths, then everything I had ever known was a lie.
