The weight of everything hit me the moment we stepped into the elevator. It felt like an invisible noose tightening around my neck, a suffocating presence that had been lurking ever since Kai returned to my life. He wasn’t just a memory of my past — he was a ghost, alive and walking around in the very place I thought I was safe. My heart pounded, each beat louder than the last as I leaned against the cold steel of the elevator walls, trying to steady my breathing.
Alexander stood next to me, his jaw clenched, his dark eyes focused straight ahead. He’d been my anchor through all of this, and I could feel his quiet resolve as though it were a physical force keeping me grounded. But even with him by my side, I couldn’t shake the fear crawling under my skin.
I wasn’t just afraid of Kai anymore. I was terrified of how deep this rabbit hole went, and what it meant for me, for Alexander… for everything.
The elevator dinged, and we stepped into the lobby. My heels clicked softly on the polished marble floors, a rhythmic reminder that I had to keep moving forward. My mind was still spinning, struggling to absorb the gravity of what Alexander had just told me. Kai wasn’t just some jealous ex who hadn’t moved on — he was dangerous, involved with criminals, and now, I was caught in the middle of it all.
I glanced at Alexander from the corner of my eye, his presence commanding as always. His broad shoulders, the way his black suit clung perfectly to his form, the sharp lines of his face… he looked like a man built to handle storms, and for a brief second, I wondered if I could lean on him just a little bit more.
But then I shook that thought away. I had to be strong, too. For myself.
Outside, the city was bathed in the last light of day. The soft hues of pink and orange painted the sky as the sun began to set. The familiar sounds of honking cars, distant chatter, and footsteps filled the air. It felt almost normal. Almost.
“Let’s get out of here,” Alexander murmured, his deep voice sending a shiver down my spine. He pressed his hand lightly against the small of my back, guiding me towards his sleek black car parked just outside the building.
I didn’t protest. I couldn’t trust my own legs to carry me much farther on their own anyway.
As we slid into the car, silence settled between us, but it wasn’t the uncomfortable kind. It was the sort of silence that carried weight — a shared understanding. Alexander started the engine, and the low hum of the car filled the air as we pulled away from the building.
“Where are we going?” I asked quietly, breaking the silence. My voice sounded small, even to my own ears.
“My place,” Alexander responded without hesitation, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. “You’ll be safer there.”
I nodded, but my mind was elsewhere. I had been to his apartment before — briefly — but this time, it felt different. I was stepping into his world, a place where I’d be vulnerable and exposed, and yet… it felt like the only option.

The drive was a blur, and before I knew it, we were pulling up to Alexander’s penthouse building. Towering above the city, his residence was a reflection of the man himself —elegant, powerful, and guarded. The doorman greeted us with a polite nod as we entered the lobby, but I barely noticed. My thoughts were miles away.
Inside the elevator, I felt the tension between us grow. Not the kind of tension born from fear or anger, but something else — something simmering beneath the surface, waiting to erupt. Alexander had always been a force of nature, but now, I was seeing parts of him I hadn’t expected. The way he had pieced everything together about Kai, the calculated way he spoke about taking him down… it was a side of him that both frightened and fascinated me.
