Alexander
The morning buzz of Blackwood Enterprises felt sharper than usual as I walked through the glass doors, Scarlett by my side, her heels clicking confidently on the marble floor. The weight of last night's revelations had wrapped around us both like an invisible thread, tying us closer, our shared secrets gluing us together in ways we couldn't deny.
I shot a glance at her. She was dressed in a sleek charcoal-gray suit that hinted at her no-nonsense attitude, but her eyes had a spark I recognized. It was that glint of resolve that made her stand out from everyone else in this building - her fierce desire to prove herself and see this through. And God, if that didn't make me want her even more.
As we strode past the wide-eyed stares of our employees, I couldn't help but smirk. Everyone knew Scarlett and I were together, but none of them could imagine the hellfire we were about to rain down on Kai. As far as they were concerned, this was just another day at Blackwood Enterprises. But to me, this was the beginning of the end for the man who had nearly cost me everything I cared about.
"Stop looking so smug," Scarlett murmured under her breath, giving me a sideways glance.
I leaned close, dropping my voice. "Can't help it. Seeing you all determined like this... well, it does something to me."
She rolled her eyes, though I caught the faintest blush on her cheeks. "Focus, Alexander. We have work to do."
"Oh, I'm focused," I said, smirking as we reached the elevator. I pressed the button for the top floor, turning to give her a slow once-over. "Trust me, there's not a single detail about you that I've missed this morning."
"Is that so?" she shot back, crossing her arms, though there was a glimmer of amusement in her eyes. "Then maybe you noticed the part where I'm about to make you pay for that cocky attitude?"
I leaned back against the elevator wall, pretending to think it over. "You're welcome to try, Ms. HR Star."
She scoffed, but I saw the faint twitch of a smile. "Keep talking, Blackwood. This is just a warm-up."
The doors slid open, and we stepped into my office, both of us dropping the banter as we got to work. I motioned to the stacks of files and digital logs Vincent had left on my desk. "This is everything we've pulled so far. Connections, shell companies, offshore accounts. Kai's been hiding his tracks well, but not well enough."
Scarlett's gaze hardened as she scanned the files, flipping through them with purpose. "So he's been using Blackwood Enterprises as his front for all these weeks, from the very first day he joined the company. Why didn't he just go elsewhere?"
"Because he knows our reputation is rock solid," I replied, crossing my arms. "If he'd set up his own operation, it would've drawn attention. Here, he could blend in, let my company's name shield him."
She nodded slowly, a thoughtful look in her eyes. "And no one suspected?"
"But I should have seen it coming. There were signs I ignored," I said bitterly.
Scarlett gave me a reassuring look. "Don't blame yourself, Alexander. He's been hiding in plain sight, waiting for the right moment. But now we're going to make sure he can't hide anymore."
She was right. Kai had his network, his alliances, and his schemes. But now, we had each other - and a plan.
---
Hours passed as we dug deeper into Kai's web, each piece of evidence adding another layer to the storm we were about to unleash. Scarlett was relentless, her mind working just as fast as mine, and I couldn't help but marvel at her focus. This was why I'd brought her into my life, and now she was here, every step of the way.
At one point, she looked up, a mischievous glint in her eye. "So... I have to ask, Alexander. How do you plan on taking Kai down? Something tells me you're not one for subtlety."
I leaned back in my chair, letting a slow grin spread across my face. "You're right. Subtlety's not my style when it comes to betrayal."
"Oh, I'm counting on that." She leaned forward, her elbows on my desk, meeting my gaze with that same fierce confidence. "So tell me... what's the first move?"
"I want him to feel the walls closing in," I replied, the words tasting like steel. "He's used to feeling untouchable, but we're going to make him see that his power was never his. It was mine."
Scarlett's eyes sparkled. "And when he realizes that?"
I leaned closer, dropping my voice to a murmur. "That's when we make him regret every choice he's made."
For a moment, we held each other's gaze, the room buzzing with unspoken promises. But then, she leaned back, letting out a sigh. "Alright, Mr. Blackwood. I like the sound of that."
The rest of the day passed in a blur. Meetings, phone calls, carefully timed messages. It was a game of shadows, each move calculated to strip away Kai's power. And through it all, Scarlett was at my side, a constant, unwavering presence.
---
By late afternoon, we'd taken our first steps - isolating Kai's allies, putting his offshore accounts on freeze, setting traps he wouldn't see until it was too late. I could practically taste victory.
But just as we were wrapping up, my phone buzzed with a message. I glanced at the screen, my jaw clenching as I read the text.
"It's from Kai," I said, looking up at Scarlett.
Her eyes widened. "What does it say?"
I handed her the phone. The message was brief, almost mocking.
"I hope you don't think I'm unaware of your little game, Alexander. After all, it would be a shame if anything happened to... her."
Scarlett's hand flew to her mouth, her face pale. But when she looked up at me, her expression was set with determination.
"He knows," she said quietly. "And he's not backing down."
I clenched my fists, forcing myself to stay calm. "Let him come. He's already lost, he just doesn't know it yet."
But inside, a dark resolve was building. If he thought he could use Scarlett against me, he was about to learn just how far I'd go to protect what was mine.
---
That evening, I made sure Scarlett was safe in her apartment, triple-checking the security measures. She rolled her eyes as I fussed over her, but there was a warmth in her gaze that made it worth every second.
"You know, you're almost cute when you're all protective," she teased as I double-checked her windows.
I smirked, turning to face her. "Cute, huh? I was going for terrifying."
"Oh, don't worry. You're still terrifying." She leaned against the doorframe, giving me a look that was all challenge. "But maybe not as much as you think."
I raised an eyebrow, taking a step closer. "Is that so?"
She nodded, a smirk playing on her lips. "In fact, I think I could take you down if I really tried."
I let out a low chuckle, closing the distance between us until there was barely an inch between us. "You wouldn't stand a chance, sweetheart."
"Try me, Blackwood."
I leaned down, my breath brushing against her ear as I murmured, "Oh, I intend to. But first, we take care of Kai."
She shivered, but she held her ground, her gaze fierce. "Then let's do it."
As I left her apartment that night, I felt a surge of adrenaline like never before. This wasn't just business anymore - it was personal. And for Scarlett, I'd burn down the entire city if I had to.
Kai had no idea what he was in for. And by the time I was done, he'd wish he'd never crossed us.
