The tension was suffocating as we prepared for the final confrontation. Every nerve in my body felt electrified, both with fear and the fierce determination to put an end to this — an end to Kai’s looming shadow that had haunted my life for far too long. Alexander had arranged everything, each piece of the plan meticulously thought out. He stood by my side, his hand a steady anchor on my shoulder, grounding me amidst the storm of emotions swirling within me.

As we entered the dimly lit boardroom where Kai was waiting, I caught sight of his smug expression —a look that seemed to say he had everything under control. But he didn’t know we were about to pull the rug from under him. The façade he wore, that charming, confident mask, felt like an insult now. All those memories of the man I’d once known— who I’d thought was just an ex-lover from my past — were now tainted by the truth of who he really was: a criminal, a manipulator, someone capable of unspeakable things.

Alexander stepped forward, his presence emanating cold authority, his gaze piercing into Kai as though he could see straight through his lies.

“Glad you could join us, Kai,” Alexander said icily, his voice like a blade slicing through the silence. “Or should I call you by your other name— the one your syndicate friends know you by?”

Kai’s mask faltered, just for a fraction of a second. He glanced between Alexander and me, a flicker of unease flashing across his face before he forced his smirk back into place. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said smoothly. “I’m just here to do my job.”

I couldn’t hold back anymore. “Your job?” I repeated, my voice trembling with the weight of everything he’d done to me, to us. “Your job is to infiltrate, manipulate, and destroy lives. Just like you tried to destroy mine as well as the one who is now my whole life, Alexander.

Kai’s smirk deepened. “Oh, Scarlett,” he said, feigning disappointment. “I thought you’d understand by now that everything I did was for a reason. I had to make sacrifices, and you were just one of them. You were a means to an end, just like Blackwood is now.”

Alexander’s jaw clenched, his fists tightening. I could feel the controlled fury radiating from him, a tension that hung in the air like a storm about to break. “You’ve used people like pawns, Kai,” he said coldly. “But your game ends here. We have enough evidence to tear down your entire operation.”

Kai chuckled, crossing his arms with a glint of arrogance. “You think a few files and whispers will bring me down? You underestimate how deep my connections run. Blackwood isn’t yours to control, Alexander. It’s mine now.”

But Alexander had anticipated this. He nodded toward the door, and Vincent entered, holding a thick folder in his hands. He placed it on the table between us, and opened it, revealing detailed records, financial transactions, and damning evidence that tied Kai directly to the syndicate.

“Do you recognize these documents?” Vincent asked, his voice steady as he flipped through each incriminating page. “The trail you left might have been hidden from most, but not from us. Every shady transaction, every contact, every asset — it’s all here, Kai.”

Kai’s face went pale. He took a step back, but his mask cracked, a glimmer of desperation breaking through. “This… this isn’t possible. I covered my tracks. This is fake.”

“Is it?” Alexander’s gaze was unforgiving. “We had someone dig into every last transaction and trace it back to you. And in just a few minutes, this will be handed over to the authorities. You can try to deny it, Kai, but you’re already out of moves.”

Kai’s eyes darkened, his gaze shifting to me with a hint of malice. “So this is how it ends, Scarlett? You side with him? After everything we had?”

Anger surged within me, all the pain and betrayal boiling to the surface. I stepped forward, meeting his gaze head-on. “What we had was built on lies. You used me, manipulated me, and I let you do it. But I’m not that person anymore. I’m done being your pawn, Kai.”

For a moment, the room went silent, the weight of the truth pressing down on us all. Kai’s arrogance evaporated, replaced by a simmering rage. He looked at Alexander, his expression turning venomous. “You think you’ve won, but this isn’t over. My connections… they’ll come for you. Both of you.”

But Alexander just gave him a cold, dismissive smile. “You won’t be in a position to call for anyone. You’re finished, Kai.”

At that moment, two security guards entered the room, moving to either side of Kai. He tried to fight them off, but they quickly subdued him, grabbing his arms and forcing him toward the door. I watched him struggle, the last remnants of his power slipping away, until he was nothing more than a broken man, dragged away to face the consequences of his actions.

As they led him out, Kai glanced over his shoulder one last time, his eyes full of hatred and fury. “You’ll regret this, Scarlett. Mark my words.”

I held my ground, refusing to let his threats shake me. “No, Kai. You’re the one who will live with regret. Goodbye.”

And then he was gone, the door slamming shut behind him, leaving Alexander and me standing alone in the aftermath. A heavy silence settled over us, but for the first time, I felt… free. The shadow of my past had finally been exorcised, leaving nothing but the promise of a new beginning.

Alexander turned to me, his eyes softening. “It’s over,” he said quietly, stepping closer, his hand reaching for mine.

I nodded, feeling the weight of everything lift from my shoulders. “Thank you,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “For being there with me through this.”

His fingers intertwined with mine, grounding me in that moment. “We’re a team, Scarlett. And as long as I’m here, you’ll never have to face anything alone.”

We stood there, hand in hand, as the sun began to set outside, casting a warm glow over the room. The nightmare was finally over, and as I looked into Alexander’s eyes, I knew that the future — our future — was just beginning.
