Evelynn and I got to the dining hall just before the early morning rush. Very few students are there, either alone or in small groups scattered around. Most other people are still asleep or already in their first class for the day. Meaning that, luckily, for us, we got plenty of options, and they're practically fully stocked. We find a table by a window, and Evelynn sets down her bag on one of the chairs. Then we split up to get our food.
When I make my way to the table, Evelynn is already sitting there with two cups and eating what seems to be a salad. She looks from her plate as I get closer, and she's left staring at me with her mouth slightly open until I sit down.
Y/N: What? Don't tell me my fly has been down this whole time.
She stays quiet but gestures to the half a dozen plates I have set down in front of me.They're loaded with a bunch of pancakes, eggs, sausage, and other stuff I grabbed while working my way through the cafeteria.
Y/N: Oh, this? Yeah, I'm having a light breakfast today.
Evelynn remains stunned for another second or two as I take my seat. Then, she lets out a small sigh, followed by chuckling to herself.
Evelynn: I almost forgot, you need all that because of your powers.
I smile and nod, about to dig in. But, that's when I realized that I didn't stop to get myself something to drink.
Y/N: I'll be back. I'm gonna go grab some water or something.
Before I get up, Evelynn slides one of the other cups over to me. I look down at the cup and see that it has coffee in it.
Y/N: Did you purposefully get this for me?
She smiles back at me, resting her chin on one of her hands.
Evelynn: Call it intuition, tiger. Now hurry up and eat so you can tell me whatever is so important.
Without saying another word, we finally start eating our breakfast. The last time we sat across each other like this was when we first hung out at that dinner off campus. That feels like forever ago now.
Evelynn eats away at her salad in a very modest manner, all while taking slow sips of her coffee. The same couldn't be said about me, however. I wouldn't go as far as to say I'm being a slob or anything, but I'm sure it's not a graceful sight. I couldn't help myself, though. The ramen I had last night was great. It just didn't leave me full.
By the time Evelynn finishes her food, I'm working on my last plate of pancakes. She puts her plate aside and sips from her coffee, looking at me over the rim.of the cup Setting it back down, she clears her throat to get my attention as I'm swallowing the food I got in my mouth.
Evelynn: So, what did you want to talk about?
Y/N: Do I need to have something important going on to come hang out with you?
I reach for her hand across the table and put on my most charming smile. She smiles back, holding my hand, though I can tell she's clearly unconvinced.
Evelynn: No, but you already brought something up. So, spill it.
Y/N: Ok, well, that night you and I had our fight; there was someone else there who watched the whole thing go down.
Evelynn: Who was it?
Y/N: Akali, heard of her?
Evelynn: I think Ahri mentioned that name before. She's that underclassman who's supposed to shadow you two for the class rep role next year, right?
Y/N: Yeah, her and a guy named Ekko. Apparently, she saw us go into that training facility and followed us inside. I never would've known she was there if she hadn't told me.
Evelynn: When did she tell you?
Y/N: Last night. I ran into her on my way to get some food, and we ended up talking for a bit.
Evelynn: Okay, so what does she want? Is she trying to blackmail us with that information?
Y/N: No, that's not the vibe I picked up from her. But she does want something.
Evelynn: Whatever it is, no. I won't be pushed around by some brat trying to act tough.
I knew this would be difficult, but I promised Akali I'd try. I don't want to see her resolve to grow stronger to go to waste.
Y/N: All she wants is a couple of sparring matches with you, that's all.
One of her eyebrows quirks up in confusion.
Evelynn: So she wants me to train her? Why me? And what for?
Y/N: Because of the way she saw you fight. She said it was about the drive you had to finish your opponent. Some sort of killer instinct she seems to admire in you. I haven't seen how she performs firsthand, but if Ahri vouches for her, then so will I. I can tell Akali has a lot of potential. She just needs someone who can help her hone her skills.
Evelynn sips from her coffee again. I can't tell if the silence she leaves behind is her way of contemplating what I just said. Or if she's trying to find a way to reject it.
Evelynn: And if I say no? What happens then?
Y/N: Nothing, I guess. But I promise it'll be worth it.
I give her hand a light squeeze, trying to reassure her that it's a good idea to train Akali. She looks back at me and then at something over my shoulder.
Evelynn: I'll give you a decision later, but right now, it looks like you have company.
She motions for me to turn around, and when I do, I see the academy’s golden boy directly approaching our table.
Garen: Y/N, Evelynn, I'm so glad I caught you two here. Must be my lucky day.
Evelynn lets go of my hand and crosses her arms, putting on her best intimidating look. Which is nothing hard for her.
Evelynn: To what do we owe the pleasure, Garen?
Garen pulls up a chair from a nearby empty table and proceeds to sit with us. He then takes a bite from the apple he is holding.
Garen: Nothing major. I just thought I’d stop by and say hello to some of my fellow peers.
Y/N: Cut to the chase. What are you really here for?
Garen: Very well, I'm here on official business from the headmasters.
For the last two years, Garen has essentially been the right-hand man to the headmasters. Personally, taking on and successfully executing any of their orders. They hand-picked him for his abilities as a warrior, his unwavering loyalty, and his devotion to doing what's right. At least, that's how I've heard the story. Although I have no personal problem with him, his position has caused him to be somewhat alienated and disliked by most people.
Y/N: What do the headmasters want?
Garen: They didn't say they just tasked me with getting you to their meeting chamber.
Y/N: Okay, when do I have to see them?
Garen: Now. Not just you, however. They want Evelynn to come as well.
Evelynn and I exchange a bemused look.
Evelynn: I can see why they want to see Y/N. He's a class rep. But what do they want with me?
Garen: They're gathering the top five students at the academy. So whatever it is they planned with all of you, it's something big.
