It's a cloudy day, so I've made myself comfortable with a cup of tea and my laptop in my room. Since we don't even know where to start looking for the shooter, there's not much left for us to do but wait for further information from S.H.I.E.L.D. To distract myself from the Fury problem, I plunged back into researching Bucky. I'd say problems are fought with more problems. Probably not the best way to relax, but oh well. I keep trying to find something about his wife, but there's absolutely nothing. It's as if she never existed. She's not mentioned in any text, and there's no record of her anywhere. All the articles that come up revolve around Bucky, the Howling Commandos, or Steve. A woman named Margaret Carter is also often mentioned; she and Steve were kind of a couple back then, and for some reason, she seems familiar. However, it's likely that I've just seen a picture of her at some point since she is one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D. I continue clicking through articles but find absolutely nothing. The whole thing confuses me even more, and I'm about to call it quits for today when another article pops up. I've definitely landed deep into the internet, and this website is certainly not trustworthy, but curiosity wins. "The Unsolved Mystery of Mrs. Barnes' Disappearance and the Dark Shadows of Conspiracy" reads the title. As I click on the page, more scanned images of a newspaper article appear.
"In 1944, during World War II, a mysterious disappearance occurred that remains unsolved to this day: Mrs. Barnes, the wife of fallen soldier James Buchanan Barnes, vanished without a trace. After her husband's death, she was left alone and seemed to have vanished off the face of the earth. The official version of the case suggests suicide, as it's believed that Mrs. Barnes could not bear the loss of her husband. However, this assumption is doubted by some, including her own parents, who searched in vain for their daughter for years. They suspect that there is more to her disappearance than just personal grief. Conspiracy theories surround the case. Some speculate that she may have fallen victim to the natural disasters that struck various parts of the country in 1944. Since not all the bodies were ever recovered and there are still countless missing from this tragedy, it doesn't seem far-fetched that Mrs. Barnes was perhaps in the wrong place at the wrong time. Others claim she was kidnapped, possibly as an act of revenge for her husband's actions during the war. Still others speculate about a government cover-up to hide dark secrets. Did she know something she shouldn't have? The fact that no trace of her was ever found and that over time even any signs of her existence disappeared fuels these speculations and leaves room for wild theories. Interestingly, some acquaintances of the missing woman, including Steve Rogers, better known as Captain America, and Officer Margaret Elizabeth Carter, a close friend of Mrs. Barnes, have refused to comment on the case. Their silence led to further speculation about possible secrets connected to her disappearance. Despite an intensive search and numerous theories, the fate of Mrs. Barnes remains a mystery that continues to captivate minds. Was she a victim of conspiracy or a dark force? Was she buried or caught in the disasters? Or did she disappear voluntarily to escape the pain? The answers remain hidden, and the mystery of this case may never be solved. The case was closed in 1946 and remains a cold case. Her relatives had to witness an empty coffin being buried next to her husband's."
I can't breathe. My chest tightens. She disappeared after Bucky's death and was never found. What on earth happened to her? Her full name is still not mentioned anywhere. This is really getting crazier by the minute. I decide to stop the search for today and close my laptop with trembling hands. I pause for a moment, look out the window, and shake my head. It was probably faked, otherwise there would be much more written about it. Such a tragedy doesn't stay in the dark. I take a final sip of my tea, which has now gone cold, before heading to the bathroom. A warm shower will help me relax, and maybe I can wash away all my worries too. It would be cool if that were possible. The water runs down my body, and I close my eyes. For the next few minutes, I focus on the sound of the water and tune everything else out.
My worries might not be completely washed away, but I feel much better. I quickly grab a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, get dressed, and am about to reach for my jacket when Sitwell's voice echoes through the speakers throughout the building. I've never liked the guy, and it's not just because he looks like a bespectacled penguin—he's also an arrogant jerk. From my very first day here, I've wanted to punch him in the face. "Attention, everyone, forget what you're working on. Inform the traffic control center, all traffic lights in the district turn red. Close all airfields at all airports in and around Washington. Scan all sources, phones, computers, whatever. Any information you receive must be immediately forwarded to the leadership level. Captain America is on the run."
What? Gunshots ring out, and my blood freezes. One of our ships flies over the bridge and fires at a motorcycle. Steve's motorcycle. Okay, if I ever say a day couldn't get any worse, someone remind me that it can. Steve throws his shield at the ship, causing a small explosion, and then it crashes onto the bridge as Steve races away. Well, if he's on the run, then Nat and I are too. I grab my gold ring from my nightstand, pull on my black boots while running, and grab my jacket from the hook, then rush out of my room. Nat must have had the same thought because she comes out of her room at the same time, and we run for the elevator.
It's pure chaos everywhere, but that works to our advantage, and we manage to make it to the garage without being stopped. However, gunshots are soon fired in our direction. What the hell is going on? Nobody hits us. My God, where did you all learn to shoot? A dozen guards are after us, and we get into my car as fast as we can. Even before Nat can close the door, I slam on the gas. I've never been so grateful for a bulletproof car as I am at this moment. The order to close the gate comes over the intercom, so I push the gas pedal all the way down, and we barely make it through. That was close.
Steve better have a good explanation for all this. We drive over the bridge and are now out of range of any weapons. However, S.H.I.E.L.D can track any of our vehicles, so we need to ditch this one quickly. My poor car. So, now we're fugitives. Not exactly what I meant when I said, "I need action," but hey, you take what you get. This is going to be great.
Things really can't get any worse now.

Steve is on the run, and of course, that also applies to Elora and Nat.
How much truth is there to the article about Mrs. Barnes? What really happened to her? We'll find out, that's for sure ;)
See you soon <3
