I was feelin' restless the next day. I needed to do smethin' to get her off my mind.
I kept havin' flashbacks. The most common is that one where she told me once we got to New York she'd take me to the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop. At first I didn't believe it existed but she looked it up for me to see and it was real.
I got up from my bed suddenly. I knew what to do.
I packed my bag full of everything is need for one day.
Before I know it I'm on a bus.
And then I'm at an airport.
And then I'm on a plane.
I looked out the window and down at the earth that was gettin' smaller and smaller. That's when panic set in.
Sure, I had my phone. But I was still a small town girl goin' to the big city all alone.
I'm only fifteen!
But then the earth was covered by the clouds and it was out of my mind. All I could think about was her. It was as if she were right there next to me on that plane, tellin' me that everything would be okay.
When we landed in NYC I had to take another bus to my destination.
My phone had about forty missed calls from my parents and thirty texts.
I simply sent them a group reply.
Me: I'm okay. I'll be home sometime tomorrow.
Dad: WHERE ARE YOU???
Me: Where I need to be
Mom: Come home now!
Me: Can't
And with that I shut my phone off and looked back up. I was standin' in front of a little shop with clear windows and a big sign that read: "Big Gay Ice Cream Shop."
I didn't hesitate before pushin' the door open and goin' in.
The lady asked me what I wanted. Her name tag said Emerald. She was old but had a nose ring and an eyebrow piercing and her gray hair was streaked with teal and hot pink.
I ordered a simple strawberry scoop in a waffle cone and paid for it.
Then I walked outside and sat on the unoccupied bench in front of the shop and began to eat.
I turned my head and there she was, sittin' beside me with a chocolate cone, lickin' it and laughin' her beautiful laugh.
"Brooklyn?" I said in shock.
"Carolina?" She mocked playfully, laughin'.
"What're you doin' here? I thought you were dead!"
"I am dead."
My eyes widened. "Are you a ghost?"
She laughed again and shook her head. "Nah. I'm just not really here. You're imagining me."
I felt tears come to my eyes.
"No don't cry!" She said, puttin' her hand on my back in comfort. It felt so real.
I sniffled. "I want you back."
Brooklyn smiled sadly. "Well you can't have me back. I'm sorry, baby. I wish I could come back."
"It's my fault. I gave you the anklet."
She shook her head adamantly. "No. You didn't know it would happen. Not your fault."
I wiped my eyes with my shirt sleeve. "Why did you have to go? Why did you have to leave me all by myself?"
Brooklyn sighed and looked out at the passin' cars. "Isn't New York City amazing?"
My brow furrowed at the subject change, but I answered. "Yeah. I love it."
She grinned. "I knew you would. That's why I wanted to take you here."
"I wish you could've."
"I did in spirit." She rolled her eyes and laughed again. "Listen to me. I'm babbling about spirit and supernatural stuff. Utterly ridiculous."
I smiled. "It's not so ridiculous."
She shrugged. "Everyone's got their opinion I guess." She looked deeply into my eyes. "You love supernatural stuff, don't you?"
I nodded.
She sighed. "Well I better go."
"No!" I cried. "Don't leave me again, please!"
She smiled sadly. "I have to go. I have to rest. You'll see me again someday. But live your life, Carolina. You'll do amazing things, I just know it."
"How am I supposed to go on without you?" I gasped, holdin' onto her shirt sleeve.
"You're strong. Don't pretend like you aren't. You can get through anything."
I nodded in resignation. "I love you."
"I love you too." Then she smirked and pointed. "Your ice cream is melting."
I looked down at my cone to see that it was.
When I looked back up she was gone.
-
"Where the hell were you!?" Dad's voice greeted me at the door.
"I haven't slept in a day. Just let me go up to my room."
"Not until you tell us where you were!" Mom said.
"New York." I brushed past them and began up the stairs.
I could hear them yelling but I just put my earbuds in, laid down on my bed and fell into a deep sleep.
I had done what I needed to do.
