In the dimly lit Slytherin common room, a small crowd of Slytherins had gathered around a sobbing Hufflepuff child who had wandered into their territory by mistake.
The child, clutching a tattered teddy bear, was clearly distressed and teary-eyed.
Evan, a tall and somewhat anxious Slytherin, wrung his hands nervously.
“What are we supposed to do?” he asked, his eyes darting around the room for answers.
Barty, leaning against the stone wall with a mischievous glint in his eye, offered a chilling suggestion.
“We should kill it.”
Pandora, a beautiful-dreamy Ravenclaw girl with a fierce protective streak over her friends, shot Barty a scathing look.
"No, Barty! You can’t kill a child!”
Barty smirked.
"Wanna bet?”
The situation seemed to escalate as Evan’s anxiety grew.
“Oh my Merling, it’s getting worse,” he lamented, noticing the child’s cries becoming louder and more frantic.
Regulus, who had been silently observing the commotion, stepped forward with a serene calmness that seemed to cut through the tension.
His dark eyes softened as he approached the frightened child.
“Now hush, little baby, don’t you cry,” Regulus sang softly, his voice gentle and soothing.
“Everything’s gonna be alright.”
To everyone’s astonishment, the child’s sobs gradually subsided.
The room fell silent as the first-year Hufflepuff looked up at Regulus with wide, tear-streaked eyes.
Regulus’s presence had a magical calming effect, and the child’s breathing evened out as they gazed up at him.
Barty’s mouth hung open in disbelief.
“How?” he demanded.
"How did you do that?”
Regulus smiled faintly, his eyes twinkling with a rare warmth.
“I told you, Regulus is here to hold you in the night.”
The other Slytherins exchanged bewildered glances.
Barty, unable to come up with a retort, simply huffed and turned away.
Pandora, relieved, watched as Regulus knelt beside the child, gently patting their back.
Evan let out a sigh of relief, his shoulders relaxing as he observed Regulus comforting the distraught Hufflepuff.
The mood in the room shifted from one of chaos to calm, and the Slytherins watched in a mix of awe and confusion as Regulus continued his soothing lullaby.
As the child finally fell into a peaceful sleep, Regulus stood up, brushing his robes off with an air of quiet dignity.
“There’s no need for hostility,” he said softly.
“Sometimes, all it takes is a little kindness.”
Pandora nodded in agreement, giving Regulus a grateful smile.
The Slytherins, though still somewhat puzzled, now understood that there was more to their housemate than met the eye.
The Hufflepuff child’s peaceful slumber was a testament to the unexpected compassion that even the most unlikely of Slytherins could offer.
And in that quiet, unexpected moment, the Slytherins learned that kindness could be the most powerful form of magic.
