Several days went by after solving Kaela's case, and no new clients had stopped by. Although I expected it, I couldn't deny that I was hoping our situation would turn around after finding our first client.
Though having some money in our pockets definitely made these past few days a lot more bearable. At least I didn't have to worry about getting kicked out of this place anytime soon.
As I passed the time by reading through today's newspaper, familiar-sounding footsteps rang from the stairs outside. The door opened as Sari entered the office. I took a glance at the clock on my phone out of curiosity.
"It's pretty rare for you to drop by this early. Aren't you supposed to be in college right now? Don't tell me the model student decided to skip class?" I asked.
Usually, Sari would go to her classes in the morning and stop by the office past noon. After doing some cleaning and complaining, she would settle and start studying or doing her homework on her own. Before the sun set, she would pack up and return to her dorm. For her to stop by around this time was out of the ordinary.
"The teacher can't come in today, so I don't have class." Sari let out a deep sigh as she dropped her duffel bag and plopped down on the couch. "Of course he only told us about it when I just arrived in class. What a pain in the ass," she complained out loud.
"Huh, I never had that problem before."
"That's because you never went to college, detective." Sari replied to my carefree answer with a hint of annoyance in her voice.
"That's precisely why I never had that problem, hehe." I let out a cheeky laugh at her reaction.
Feeling that it was too early to be dealing with my nonsense, Sari only rolled her eyes before asking, "No luck with finding clients?"
"None whatsoever." I replied with a shrug before returning to my newspaper. "Just think of this as a break. Life's too tiring if we have to solve cases left and right every day."
I recalled the work-ridden days that I suffered through back then. If I could split myself into clones, I would gladly split myself into ten to take care of the workload that only seemed to increase every time I solved a case. Even if I wanted to help others as much as I could, solving five different cases in three different countries at the same time simply wasn't possible.
"True. Spending the day peacefully like this isn't so bad now that we have some money to spare," Sari mused with a relaxed smile as she took out her headphones from her bag. "I already finished my homework and cleaning yesterday, so I can finally spend the day doing nothing but relax-"
Knock knock!
"Excuse me, are you open?"
Sari's expression immediately soured after hearing the call from outside the door. I chuckled at her ridiculous expression before answering, "We're open, please enter!"
As our newest client opened the door, my eyes widened after recognizing our new client.
"Good morning, detective that gave me some food back then!"
"You stole it, you thieving rat!" I immediately snapped at Risu's ridiculous accusation.
Before I could continue defending myself, I spotted Sari's confused expression at the corner of my eye. With a quick explanation of what had happened a few days ago, Sari gave a look of understanding.
"She's certainly a peculiar character, detective."
"Right?!"
I almost jumped out in joy from having someone understand the headache that I went through from the brief encounter with this squirrel girl. I've never been so glad to hear Sari agreeing with me.
