"Wake up, detective!"
A shout resounded right next to me, waking me up immediately.
"Buh, whuh?! Where's the thief?" I blurted out in a half-awake state.
My eyes shot open as I scanned the surroundings in a panic. The sun had barely peeked out of the horizon, blanketing the sky in twilight. But I couldn't focus on the beauty of the skyline when there was something more important to pay attention to.
However, I was only answered with a snicker from Sari. "I'm just waking you up because it's already morning, hahaha! Even if the thief showed up, Risu told me that the alarm system she set up inside the trailer would've alerted us the moment the trailer's doors were opened."
"I see... I was worried for nothing. If she had told me about that yesterday, I wouldn't have woken up in a panic like that." I complained while scratching my chin.
However, there was another reason why I would mistake the situation like that. I checked my phone only to find the battery was depleted.
"This piece of shit phone couldn't even last a night without charging. No wonder the alarm didn't wake me up." I grumbled under my breath.
"You ran out? Here, charge it with this." Sari offered her power bank, which I took without any complaints. To my surprise, the power bank appeared to be full.
"Huh, I thought you used this yesterday. Where did you charge this?" I asked out of curiosity.
Sari motioned toward the truck while answering, "Risu has a charging port inside the truck, so I charged it there."
"Geez, this truck got everything that you need. Add a kitchen and a bathroom, and this thing's basically a camper van." I shook my head in disbelief. The idea might be feasible if Risu were carrying a kitchen and bathroom unit instead of the ice sculpture.
Though I didn't expect the thief to not strike at night. Did they decide to give up after seeing us guarding it, or were they expecting an opening before we could reach our destination?
I ended up scratching my head in frustration. If their plan were to stress me out by doing nothing, it was certainly working. The only thing we could do right now is to keep our guard up. After telling Sari to keep an eye out for the truck, I went to the toilet with the bag that Sari prepared for me yesterday. Although I hate to admit it, Sari's idea wasn't wrong. I felt a lot more comfortable after changing my clothes and cleaning myself.
Now fully freshened, I returned to the truck and found Risu and Sari in the middle of eating their breakfast. It looked like porridge to me, but there were just too many toppings and sauces on it to be the type of porridge that I was familiar with. However, my stomach argued that it looked too delicious to be worrying about that.
"Just in time, detective. Risu bought us bubur ayam, here's your portion." Sari said before handing me a styrofoam box with a plastic spoon.
"Sari even pestered me to get you one without veggies, hehe." Risu added from the sides.
"You didn't need to mention that! It's just because the detective won't eat them anyway. He'll just shovel them to me like a kid!" Sari returned Risu's remark before resuming eating.
After just one night, both of them seemed more comfortable with each other. Maybe it was from whatever talk they had with each other last night. Nevertheless, it was nice to see Sari getting along with someone her age. I'm a bit worried about Sari's social life, so I would try to ask Sari about it sometimes. But whenever I asked if she had any friends, she would only tell me to piss off with an annoyed look on her face. Was there something wrong with my question? I really couldn't figure out how to talk to others sometimes.
