Kenji sat on the rooftop of U.A., his back against the wall and arms resting on his knees. The soft breeze ruffled his hair as he gazed out over the sprawling campus. He preferred the quiet of the rooftop after missions or patrols. It helped clear his head.

His mind drifted to the patrol with Kai yesterday. They worked well together, much better than Kenji had expected. Kai’s calm precision meshed almost perfectly with his explosive unpredictability. It was weird. Too weird.

Kenji wrote down his new information on his hero analysis notebook, narrowing his eyes at the horizon. He couldn’t afford to get close to Kai. He had to focus on his goal and Kai was an annoying distraction he needed to stay away from.

“Kenji!”

The door to the rooftop slammed open, and Ren dashed out, grinning like a madman. He zipped up to Kenji in an instant, sitting cross-legged right in front of him.

“Dude! Guess what I heard!” Ren’s eyes gleamed with excitement, his quirk making him vibrate with energy.

Kenji raised an eyebrow, already regretting this conversation, eyes narrowing. "Unless it’s your resignation letter, I’m not interested."

Ren ignored the comment and continued he leaned in, voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “There’s a rumor going around that Kai requested to be on patrol with you again next week.”

Kenji blinked. “What? Why would he do that?”

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out! I mean, I saw you two fighting together yesterday, and honestly, you were pretty in sync. Like, it was scary how well you clicked. But still, it’s Kai—Mr. Ice Prince himself. Why would he want to work with you again?”

Kenji scowled. “First of all, we didn’t ‘click.’ We just got the job done. And second of all, maybe he didn’t have a choice. Aizawa probably just assigned us together again.”

Ren gave him a knowing grin. “Maybe. Or maybe Kai’s got a soft spot for you.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Kenji muttered, standing up and brushing off his pants. “Kai barely acknowledges anyone. He doesn’t have ‘soft spots.’”

Ren shrugged, still grinning. “Hey, I’m just saying, people don’t go around requesting patrol partners unless there’s something going on. Maybe he likes how you fight.”

Kenji didn’t respond, but the idea stuck with him. Kai… requesting to work with him again? It didn’t make sense. Kai wasn’t the type to go out of his way for anyone. Though they worked good together it would be better for Kenji's grades as well so he wasn't going to complain.

“Whatever,” Kenji grumbled, heading toward the door. “I’ve got better things to do”

“Sure, sure,” Ren called after him, amusement still thick in his voice. “But I’m just saying—keep an eye on him. You never know what’s going on in that guy’s head.”

"I keep an eye on everyone" Kenji replied.

The next day, Kenji found himself once again standing outside the gates of Musutafu Station. His assignment? Another patrol—this time partnered with Kai, just like Ren had predicted.

Kenji leaned against the wall, tapping his foot impatiently as he waited for Kai to arrive. If Ren’s right, he better watch kai today this smelled fishy.

Before long, Kai approached, his usual cool demeanor in place. He gave Kenji a brief nod of acknowledgment, but his expression remained unreadable.

“Let’s get this over with,” Kenji muttered as they began walking the route. The streets were busy with shoppers, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
