When Lam My rushed into the hospital with a pale face, Quach Phuong had already completed her first round of radiation therapy.
Quach Phuong had known Lam My since her university days. She was born into a family that valued men over women. Her family originally wanted her to drop out of school to get married, and provide a dowry for her younger brother's education.
Lam My had pleaded desperately but to no avail, so she decided to leave home, taking a bus to the city to study, and work on her own. Two individuals, two different circumstances, yet they had formed a strong bond. Quach Phuong saw Lam My as her own family, while Lam My also regarded Quach Phuong as her blood sister.
When Quach Phuong got married, Lam My had also attended, and even served as her bridesmaid. At that moment, Lam My knew that this marriage was doomed to be unhappy, Quach Phuong could only consider half of her life wasted.
For the past three years, Quach Phuong had lived a secluded life, rarely contacting anyone, and obediently playing the role of Tan Duat's temporary wife. Meanwhile, Lam My struggled with a life of hard work and poverty, she also had to endure constant pressure from her family, who urged her to send money back home every day.
Unexpectedly, after three years, Quach Phuong and Lam My would meet again under these circumstances.
Late-stage cervical cancer. It was like lightning on a clear day.
Looking at Quach Phuong lying pale on the hospital bed, her eyes blurred, Lam My couldn't hold back her tears.
"Quach Phuong, you damned brat!" Lam My hugged her and wailed, crying until she felt utterly drained. Quach Phuong felt heartbroken, wiped her tears away: "Come on, don't cry. If you do that, I'll cry too."
"You're only 26, Quach Phuong, you can't die before me. I beg of you.""Okay, okay, I won't die before you. I can live until you get married, and become Lam My's bridesmaid."
Quach Phuong gently smiled, but it was weak. It seemed like nothing in this world could take away her smile. Quach Phuong was a very meticulous person, and often paid attention to everyone around her. Regardless of whether they treated her well, or took advantage of her, she treated them all sincerely with her heart and soul.
A girl that was as warm as the noon sun, why didn't her life, from start to finish, contain even a glimmer of light? Lam My couldn't understand, nor could she bear to replace Quach Phuong's pain.
Quach Phuong lay beside Lam My, resting her head on her shoulder, and gently said: "Lam My, I've divorced."
If it were like before, Lam My would have scolded Quach Phuong thoroughly. She would have scolded her for being foolish, scolded her for being obstinate and torturing herself over a man who didn't love her, turning herself into neither human nor ghost. But now, seeing her so thin and frail, with such weak breaths, Lam My could only choke back her tears, and gently stroke her hair: "Divorce is good. Don't think about that guy anymore. When I get rich in the future, I'll definitely bring you some male companions. You can choose any type you want."
Quach Phuong laughed: "You keep them for yourself. I don't have that kind of hobby."
"You're so old-fashioned. You still wear the same shirt you bought in the first year of college even after graduation. You liked someone from when you were sixteen, and you still like them ten years later. Quach Phuong, be selfish for once. If anyone says you're not good, I'll fight them for you. If it weren't for you, I would have fed that bastard Tan Duat to the wolves. You're so good, if he doesn't love you, he should have at least returned you to me." Lam My cried as she spoke, her chest heaving.
Quach Phuong did not react, a faint smile still hung on her lips. She felt very tired, and simply wanted to sleep.
"Lam My, being able to be Tan Duat's wife in this life means that my wish has been fulfilled. I have no regrets, nor do I hope for anything more. That's enough." Quach Phuong closed her eyes, and quietly fell asleep beside Lam My.
