The long drive from the police station feels endless to Benji as he sits behind Ichabod's car seat, lost in a whirlwind of thoughts that swirl like autumn leaves caught in a gust of wind.
Dried bloodstains mar the boy's dark hair and pale cheeks. His piercing blue eyes swell to the size of marbles, reflecting fear and determination. Tilting his head to his filthy shoes, Benji tries to take a couple of deep breaths, but he can't get the monsters or the dead officers out of his brain.
"Just what the hell happened back there?" inquired Benji. "How did Detective Cortez and the other officers die like that?"
"Could it be the council?" Casper speculates behind the wheel. "It's no secret they hated the stunt Lila and her team pulled at that St. Goody-Two-Shoes school."
Carelessly tossing the filthy wipes out the window, Cricket scoffs, "Yeah, it makes a lot of sense, but why would the council kill her now?"
A silent Soleil nods in agreement. Bits of flesh slither along her dark hair. The girl's skin crawls with revulsion as Soleil witnesses the blood underneath her badly chipped fingernails.
Sometimes, she wishes she'd never received the letter from the St. George family.
Soleil thought if she went there, it could give her the closure she badly needed. Instead, Soleil discovers that her philandering, neglectful father is representing the St. George family, monsters are hunting down her best friends, and someone murdered her self-centered classmates.
Although Soleil and her friends have been through traumatic situations before, they never had monsters or demons chase after them.
What is the actual hell going on in Louisiana?
Soleil ponders this as she thinks about the encrypted words scribbled on the kitchen walls. Her sticky fingers tug the zipper of her green backpack, only to hesitate when Soleil recalls the cops confiscating her camera.
"Fuck," she swears. "I forgot my camera."
Stunned, Casper glances at his friend through the rearview mirror. He senses the intense expression on Soleil's face and halts before the beaming stoplight.
Next, the young shapeshifter places his hand on the floor and retrieves the Olympus M1 camera trapped in a large plastic bag. After holding out the device to Soleil, Casper eventually tells her that the lenses are cracked due to him stuffing it inside his pants.
"Really?" Soleil inquires, shocked. "You brought the camera? How?"
Before those Rougarou dogs tore most of the cops to shreds," Casper begins. "I disguised myself as a cop and snuck into the evidence room, where I had to con Lila's buddies into forking my guns and your camera to me."
A huge smile stretches across her lips as the witch anxiously opens the plastic bag and clutches her camera with her bloody fingers.
"Thank you so much, Cass!" Soleil squeals. "If I weren't covered in blood, I would kiss you on the cheek!"
