IT'S MY FIRST TIME BACK IN SCHOOL AFTER BEING GONE FOR A FEW DAYS. I decided it would be best to spend some time in Alaska, away from humans. My thirst was growing rapidly, and being near that human wasn't helping.

Humans are curious creatures, creatures that I no longer understand after not being one for over a century. But her emotions are even more confusing. She puts up this brave front, when internally she's terrified. She's in agony, and she's starving.

I spot her scent before I see her and Tallulah walks into the room, talking with a boy about her music playlist. She playfully rolls her eyes with a slight laugh and makes her way over to me. Even though I've fed, her scent never fails to make me feel parched.

We lock eyes and mine instantly search over every detail of her face unconsciously. She sits down and her curls move over her shoulders. Happiness radiates from her. "Hey, welcome back." She smiles at me and I chuckle slightly.

"I hope you didn't miss me too much." I tease and she rolls her eyes with a smile. "Were you sick?" I nod my head at her question. It's a lie, vampires can't get sick. "Yeah, nasty flu. Couldn't get out of bed." For some odd reason, I feel bad lying to her.

She pulls a face at my words and disgust crawls through her. "Gosh. I hate being sick. Just thinking about being sick makes me feel sick." It does. I can feel it. I chuckle slightly at her words. The scent of blood isn't as much today and my eyes lock on her stomach, it isn't bleeding anymore.

"Your stomach better?" I ask and she nods. Worry moves through her. "Yeah, all good now. It was just a little sore." She says and Mr. Molina walks to the front of the classroom. My eyes slowly move to him after staring at Tallulah for a second longer than I should've.

"Onion root tip cells, that's what's on your slides right now. Okay? So, spectate and label them into the phases of mitosis and the first partners that get it right are gonna win The Golden Onion." He claps the onion in his hands with a grin on his face.

People groan and boo at him, it makes Tallulah feel a small amount of sadness. "Ladies first." I say and push the microscope to her. She smiles at takes it gratefully, placing in a slide. She glances into it and I grab a pen to write down the answers.

"Anaphase." I nod at her words and write it down in my notebook. She pushes the microscope towards me and I change the slides. "Prophase." I say with a quick glance and write down the answer. I've done biology so many times that these questions have no effect on me.

"How are you findin' it here?" I ask her with a glance and she switches slides. Sadness and pain crawl through her. "Metaphase. Yeah, it's been good. Just cold. Oh, and I'm going to Chicago for the weekend." The sadness washes away and gets replaced by happiness. I write down the answer and hum along with her words.
