I walked into the dining room and paused while I "watched" my "brothers" quickly set the table with plates, bowls, cups, and silverware, grabbing my staff tighter in my hand.
The girls stayed silent and stayed behind me while they watched the bows work, waiting for me to lead them to the table, even though they could get by me and sit down if they wanted me to.
As soon as the boys were done setting the table, they looked toward us and smiled. "Go ahead and sit down," they said in unison. "Mom and Dad will be out with the food shortly."
I set my jaw and slowly nodded, hoping that we wouldn't be in the way of Katherine and John while they placed the food on the table as well as any drinks that they might have gotten for us. I walked over to a seat in the back and bit back a tired sigh while I slowly sat down, and one of the twins appeared at my side as soon as I did so.
"Do you want me to put your staff by the wall, Carley?" the twin, Vallum, asked and raised an eyebrow in question while he stood beside me. "It'll be right behind you."
I breathed a small sigh of relief and nodded, grateful that he would do that for me. "Sure," I said, handing it to him. "Thank you, Vallum."
Vallum bit back a small smile and took it from me, being very careful so that he wouldn't show its other side. He walked over to the wall and set it down behind me before he walked back over to the table where I had two girls on either side of me. He frowned, teasingly, but didn't say a word while he walked somewhere to find another place to sit.
"Are you mad?" Bethany asked from my left, watching Vallum walk away from me, sulking. There was a small bit of amusement in her voice while she watched him find a different seat, and I bit back a small snort.
"I am sure that he isn't mad," I said with a shake of my head and looked at my "brother" with a raised eyebrow. "Are you faking it?"
"Yes," he said and nodded with an innocent grin. He sat down in a different seat next to his twin before he cleared his throat and shifted in his chair. "What are we going to do after we eat?" he asked, changing the subject while he looked at his father, who had entered the dining room from the kitchen with food in his hands.
"You and your brother are going to rest because you two are sick," John said while he walked over to the table, doing something that I couldn't see and earning a small groan of annoyance from the twins. "I am going to help Carley with her group and get them settled in at their new house."
"And is there someone that will be like a parent to us?" Bethany asked, and he nodded. "Who?"
"So it is a couple," John said and set the plates on the center of the table before he walked over to a seat and sat down without Katharine coming in with more food. "They are called Julian and Marcel Greene. They are people that I trust and will look after you all and make sure that you all have a better life ahead of you than what you had been given so far."
The girls looked at each other, the shift of their head telling me as much while they grew hesitant and nervous because they did not know if they would like it with them or not. "How far are they from here?" Bethany asked, her voice barely above a whisper and traced with fear.
"It's about a thirty minute car ride from the community," John replied, tucking his head closer to his chest and trying to soothe them from the fear that they were feeling, "so they aren't too far from us."
I pressed my lips into a thin line, silently wondering if that meant they were Werewolves or were close to the Supernatural Community, which was why John trusted them more than others.
Were there other humans that knew about the other side and not just me?
I had always wondered that and wondered if I was alone in seeing something behind a closed door that most could not see for the safety of the communities and not upset the balance between them.
"How far is Mabdy going to be?" Bethany asked, and Mandy grew tense from my left while her heart skipped a beat before it started to pound faster and harder in her chest.
"Unfortunately she will be a couple of hours away, but she will be with her family," John replied. He cleared his throat and gestured toward the table, changing the subject. "Katherine will be in shortly with the rest of the food. Go ahead and start getting the food that is on the table so that you all can start to eat. Carley, will you need any help?" He looked at me when he asked that.
I shook my head no. "I-"
"I got you, Carley," Mandy said, interrupting me. "I can help you." She started to put stuff on my plate, and I couldn't help but look at her with a small frown on my face.
She hesitated and shook her head before she cleared her throat and shifted in her seat, continuing to put food on my plate. "Please, don't say a word, Carley. Let me do this for you." Her voice was barely above a whisper and filled with a small play, and my heart grew sullen and became filled with pain.
I bit back a tired sigh and slowly nodded, relenting. "Ok," I said and let her continue. "Thank you, Mandy."
The other girls started to put stuff on their plates while Mandy did mine and hers. The older girls helped the younger ones without me having to tell them to do it, and I couldn't help but breathe a small sigh of relief, grateful that they were there to help.
"When is Mandy's father coming?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question while I looked at John. "And are we going to meet him at the big house, or is he going to come here?"
Mandy grew tense beside me, and I could tell that she didn't want to know when he was going to appear. She stayed silent while she continued to put food on my plate and on hers, biting the inside of her lip.
"He will be here in a couple of hours," John said before he cleared his throat and shifted in his seat. "Are you ok with that?" he asked and cocked his head while he studied her.
Mandy sighed and slowly nodded while she finished with my food and sat down in the seat beside me. "Ok," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Where are we going to meet him?"
"We are going to meet at the main house," John said and slowly nodded with a small hum in his voice. "Now, go ahead and start eating. Katherine will be here shortly with some more food."
I breathed a small sigh of relief and slowly nodded. "Ok," I said before I cleared my throat and shifted in my seat. "Thank you, John," I said and started to eat, and the girls followed my lead and started to eat as well. "I appreciate it. We all do."
"Of course, Carley," John said and slowly nodded, tucking his head closer to his chest. "We will do anything in our power to help you and your group. You have our word."
