While driving me back home from school, Max was silent. His whole body was tense, and I knew that he had heard from his father at school. His grip was tight on the steering wheel, and I wondered if he knew that it was.
Finally, I broke the tense silence with a sigh and turned to look at him. "Let go of the steering wheel so hard, Max," I said, studying him with unseeing eyes. "I won't be surprised if you broke it already or not." I gave him a pointed look, and Max let out a breathless chuckle but did what I told him to do.
"So, I think you figured out that I had heard from my father?" Max asked, and I nodded my head in confirmation. He sighed and moved a hand across his face, and I could feel him become stressed and tired. "I don't know what I'm going to do, Carley," he said tiredly. "I don't know what Sam had told him."
"Well, you tell him what you can without spilling the beans about me knowing about Werewolves," I replied. "Tell him that you don't like how you are supposed to be treating Peter, ignoring him when all you want to be is his friend."
Max chuckled coldly. His grip tightened on the steering wheel, and he again set his jaw. "It's not that simple, Carley," he said coldly. "I wish it were, but it isn't."
I rolled my eyes and shook my head. "You men make everything complicated," I mused, and he looked at me. I had a feeling that he raised his eyebrow, and I scowled. "You're all, 'it's not that simple.' 'Oh my gosh, this is so hard.' Wah," I tried to imitate a male's voice, and Max snorted, and I could tell that he rolled his eyes.
"We do not," he teased. "I am sure that females do it more than men." He gave me a pointed look, and I rolled my eyes. He sighed and grew serious, biting his lip while he tried to come up with something else to say. "I don't want to do this alone," he said finally. He looked at me and cleared his throat, drumming his fingers against the steering wheel. "Do you think you can go in there as well?"
"Why? Does the baby Beta need protection?" I teased and earned a snort from Max. I grew serious and nodded my head. "Sure," I replied. "I don't see a problem with it. I-"
"You don't see at all," Max pointed out, interrupting me, and I rolled my eyes and scowled.
"Thank you, Captain Obvious," I replied sarcastically. "I know I can't see, Stupid."
Max chuckled. "You're welcome, Lieutenant Sarcasm," Max replied. He cleared his throat again and gestured for me to continue what I was going to say before he interrupted me. "Anyway, continue, please. What were you going to say?"
"I was going to say that if they don't have a problem with it, then I will join in the discussion. However, if they do have a problem with it, then you are on your own."
"Gee, thanks," Max said, sarcastically. He sighed and drummed his hand on his steering wheel. "I just don't want to keep being rude to Peter, you know?" He sighed again and shook his head. "Well, I wasn't rude to him, but I didn't do anything to stop him from being bullied. Sandy tries, but..." He shrugged and grimaced, and I had a feeling that no one listened to her.
"Is she nice?" I asked, and Max nodded his head. I was curious about this... female. I had a feeling that she was nice, but I wanted to see what Max had to say.
There was something about her that I respected, that I know, but I didn't know why. All I knew was that I wanted to see if I could be friends with her and if she would accept me for being blind.
"Very," he replied, instantly and without hesitation. "And no, she isn't my mate, so close your mouth." He gave me a pointed look, and I closed my mouth instantly without saying anything. "I just respect her, is all." He shrugged his shoulders and acted indifferently.
He had slight feelings for her; I could tell. However, I did not know if he knew that he had feelings for her or not, and if he didn't, then I had no idea how he would react when she found his mate.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Max asked.
"Looking at you like what?"
"Like I am something you need to dissect," Max replied. "It's creeping me out, especially since you are blind."
I furrowed my brows in confusion and cocked my head. I stayed silent because I did not know how to respond, and I didn't know if I wanted to know what he meant when he said that I wanted to "dissect" him.
Max sighed, and I could feel his gaze on me before he turned to look at the road. "It means that you want to find the hidden meaning of something, basically," he said. "Like you want to understand me and read me like an open book."
"Ok..? I have no idea what that means."
Max huffed and shook his head. "Never mind," he said, and I rolled my eyes and pursed my lips in annoyance. "I don't know the correct analogy to use, and I am sure that I will confuse you more if I try."
I bit back a snort and nodded my head, taking his answer because I had a feeling that I knew he would leave me more confused than ever. My ear twitched when I heard Max's heartbeat pick up and felt the car slowing down to a crawl until he stopped in front of the house.
Max sighed and drummed his hand on the steering wheel, putting the car in park. "Well," he said nervously. "I guess that we should go in and face the music, shouldn't we?" He cleared his throat and shifted in his seat. "Le-"
"No," I said, interrupting him. "I did not put these damn shoes back on for you to say, 'let's go somewhere else and not do this,' Max. I placed these shoes on because I knew there would have been questions if I came home with different shoes, questions that I did not know how to answer."
"Well, you could have told them what Fate told you what to say," Max pointed out. "But please, can we go somewhere else?" He was begging. The Beta was actually begging for me to save him.
"Sorry, but you are going to have to face this no matter what. It'd be better to get it done with now."
"Fine." He placed the car in park with a loud, mocking huff.
I rolled my eyes and snorted before I opened the door, ready to get out and help him face the music of why he hadn't done what he was told to do.
Men...
