The days following Ash's meeting with Mr. Tompson were filled with a mixture of anticipation and unease. School was a welcome distraction, but his thoughts kept drifting back to the forest, the mysterious creature, and the ancient runes. His interactions with Micheal, though still filled with teasing, were less bothersome as he became increasingly absorbed in the mystery he was unravelling.
As the weekend approached, Ash's anxiety grew. He had hoped for faster answers, but the forest's secrets seemed to unravel at a frustratingly slow pace. Finally, on Friday afternoon, Mr. Tompson called Ash with more news.
"Ash, I've made some significant progress," Mr. Tompson said over the phone. "Meet me at the library tomorrow morning. I've found something that might be crucial to understanding the forest's history and the creature you encountered."
Ash's heart raced with excitement. "I'll be there. Thanks, Mr. Tompson."
The next morning, Ash arrived at the library early, eager to learn more. Mr. Tompson was already there, surrounded by a stack of old books and historical documents. He greeted Ash with a serious expression.
"Good to see you, Ash. I've found some records that might help explain the strange happenings in the forest," Mr. Tompson said. "I've come across an old manuscript detailing the history of the forest and its significance."
Mr Tompson opened an ancient book with delicate, yellowed pages. "According to this manuscript, the forest was once a sacred site for a group of ancient practitioners who believed that the land was alive and imbued with powerful spirits. The symbols you found are part of a complex system of protection and appeasement rituals."
Ash leaned in, his curiosity piqued. "So, what about the creature? Does this manuscript say anything about it?"
"Yes," Mr. Tompson said, pointing to a section of the manuscript. "It mentions guardian spirits that were believed to protect the forest from malevolent forces. However, if these spirits are disturbed or if the balance is disrupted, they could become hostile. It seems the creature you saw could be a manifestation of these guardian spirits turned malevolent."
Ash's mind raced. "So, the forest is trying to protect itself from something? What could have disturbed the balance?"
Mr. Tompson nodded gravely. "That's the key question. The manuscript hints at a possible source of disturbance—an artifact or a ritual gone wrong. There's a mention of an ancient artifact that was said to have the power to either protect or corrupt the forest's balance."
Ash thought back to the journals and the symbols he had seen. "Do you think the runes I found might be related to this artifact?"
"It's possible," Mr. Tompson said. "The runes on the stone altar might be related to the artifact or its resting place. It's important to identify this artifact and understand its purpose."
Ash felt a mix of excitement and trepidation. "So, what should I do now?"
"For now?" Mr. Tompson said, "We need to gather more information about this artifact and how it might be connected to the runes you found. I'll continue my research, but in the meantime, I suggest you stay away from the forest. It's too dangerous until we fully understand what's going on."
Ash nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "I'll stay away. Thank you for all your help, Mr. Tompson."
