Alex and McCullough fell into a comfortable pattern over the next two weeks. They met in their closet, where they fooled around heavily and played cards, and they often walked down to Ad Seg with the book cart together. After McCullough left the prison, Alex called her at night. They would talk on the phone until it was time to sleep.
One night in particular, they were on the phone until 3am. Alex checked her phone's battery. "My phone is dying. I need to go, and you need to sleep" Alex said softly.
"Don't worry, I'll sleep" McCullough promised.
"Good. Until tomorrow" Alex said. She ended the call. A mischievous smirk came to her as she called McCullough back and McCullough answered. Alex grinned as she spoke before McCullough. "I thought you said you were going to sleep" Alex said softly.
"I thought you said that your phone was dying" McCullough countered, but followed up with a more serious statement. "I'll always answer when you call, Alex. It doesn't matter what I'm doing or where I am." Alex loved hearing those words from her . "Okay, my phone really is about to die. I'm going to sleep for real this time" Alex replied back.
McCullough: "Goodnight, Alex."
Alex: "Goodnight, Arty."
They ended their call. Alex went to sleep that night, feeling absolutely smitten. The morning to follow wouldn't be a good day for the inmate though.
