Summer was supposed to be one of the best times of the year. Yet, I was bored every single minute. I wanted to get a job, but my mom wouldn't let me because she wanted me to be a kid and enjoy the freedom I had for as long as I could. Thank God I had my sister to keep me company!
"What are you doing tonight?" I asked Mac. Mac was too focused on her laptop to even realize I had walked in the room.
"Hello... Mac!" I said, banging on the wall.
"Stop! God you're so annoying!" Mac said as she threw her rolled up socks at me. "I'm just trying to finish up this essay and submit it before the deadline. Give me two seconds."
I sat on her bed and looked around. I saw the pregnancy kit I got for her in the trash can. I went and pulled it out and stood next to her.
"Why didn't you tell me you took this test?" "Are you pregnant!" I was shocked that she didn't give me a personal invite for this test.
"Shut up! Mom is downstairs," Mac said, closing her door.
"I heard my name, what's going on?" My mom asked walking past Mac's room. She saw the pregnancy kit in my hand. I looked at Mac, Mac looked at me, and together we both said "It's not mine!" I looked at Mac once more, and she looked crushed.
My mom folded her arms and said "we need to talk." The last time my mom folded her arms and stood in my sister's bedroom saying we need to talk was when she gave us both the sex talk. She had pictures and diagrams. I was very confused but intrigued by all the different shapes and sizes. I was eleven and my sister was fourteen. Her face was as bright as a tomato, and mine screamed tell me more!
"Mom, I can explain," Mac said. She was already on the verge of tears, I couldn't stand to see my sister so weak.
"It's mine!" I interjected.
"I'm sorry, what?" My mom said switching the position of her arms.
"I thought I was pregnant, so I took a test, and it turns out I'm not," I said talking like a robot.
"Mariah, dammit, what were you thinking!" My mom was disappointed.
"Mom, she's covering for me, the test is mine. Mariah went and got it for me, because I was too ashamed to get it myself," my sister said with vulnerability.
"Girls! What! I don't even know where to begin!" My mom acted like we were playing charades with her eccentric hand gestures.
"Okay, I think what mom is trying to say is."
"Shut up!" Both my sister and mom said.
"Mariah, you're making it worse, just let me talk," Mac said. I felt betrayed by both my mom and sister. Suddenly I was the middle child of the family. You know the one everyone forgot to care about.
"Mom, I'm twenty years old, and I made a mistake. I fixed it, problem solved," Mac said.
"You're acting just like her," My mom shouted as she pointed at me. "Hey, what's wrong with that?" I asked defensively.
"You two are grounded! Give me your keys Mariah, you two Mackenzie," My mom held out her hand, expecting us to go down without a fight. I looked at Mac and she started laughing.
"Get out of my house, both of you. Leave your cars, and credit cards. Don't come back until you're ready to be a family." My mom walked out of the room making sure she took our possessions with her. She walked downstairs, and opened the door. My sister and I both stared at her like she was crazy.
"Let's go girls. If you want to do adult things without any accountability, then go, and don't come back." I started walking down the stairs first, and Mac followed. We put on our shoes and left.
"Did we really just get kicked out of our house?" I asked Mac.
"Yeah, mom has just been moody lately," Mac said.
"Where should we go?" I asked.
"I don't know Mariah, I really don't want to be near you right now, so probably somewhere away from me," Mac said as she walked away from me.
"Fine I'll just go this way," I said, walking towards the stream. Mac didn't need me. I didn't need her either, I had my thoughts.
