I waited for about five minutes to see if Wesley would come back for me, and he didn't. I felt the regret sink in as I stared at the back of his head when he walked back home. I couldn't believe it was over. We had spent every day together for the last two years, and within months it was over. Stupid cancer. I checked the time on my phone and it was only seven o'clock. My background picture was a picture of Wes and me trying to take a selfie. I meant to change it, but never had the desire to. I walked around my neighborhood calling anyone and everyone. I was desperate. Sure enough, someone answered their phone.
"What do you want loser?" Haley said with her music blaring through the phone.
"Do you want to hang out?" I asked slowly. All I could hear on the other end of the phone was Haley laughing hysterically at me. I rolled my eyes and let out a huge sigh.
"Okay, well, thanks anyway," I said.
"No, Mariah come back! Why are you calling?" She asked.
"Because I have no friends, and my boyfriend broke up with me. I was hoping we could talk," I winced at the thought of what she'd say to my idea of hanging out.
"Wow. Um... I guess I feel sorry enough for you." Haley hated the idea of talking like we were classy young ladies.
"Also, can you come pick me up? I don't have a car at the moment?" I asked nicely.
"Yeah, I'll be there in like five minutes," Haley said as she hung up the phone. I went back and waited on my porch for her to show up. Wesley was out in his truck looking for something. It was weird watching him. I pretended to text, but I was certain he knew I had no one to talk to. The more I looked at his haircut, the more enraged I became. I loved his long hair. He just looked like a cactus now, with spikes everywhere. His skinny jeans were no longer skinny. His black v-necks no longer stuck to his chest. Everything was baggy on him. The only way I could stand to look at him was if I closed my eyes.
Haley showed up and pulled into my driveway. I walked towards her car, and Wesley ran over as fast as he could to catch up with us. He gestured for Haley to roll down her window. I quickly looked away because I couldn't stand him.
"Hey, I thought we were hanging out tonight?" Wesley asked.
"Oh, right, yeah, I'm hanging out with Mariah now, sorry bud!" Haley said.
Wesley knew it was two against one, he wasn't going to win this one.
"Okay, I just wish you would have told me." His response was so simple, and nice.
"Well, I'm telling you now," Haley said batting her eyes.
"Have fun," Wesley said.
"Wes...." I said, getting his attention.
"Yeah?" He said with the sun perfectly positioned on his eyes.
"It sucks to suck," I said reassuring him that he sucked.
"You would know that better than anyone," he said, grabbing a flower from my yard.
"Here, something to remember me by!" He said as he threw the daisy into the car. I screamed for two seconds just to get it off my chest as we left my driveway.
"See, this is why I don't waste my time on meaningful relationships, you end up screwed anyways." Haley stated.
I started to rethink asking Haley to hang out. "Do you remember when we were best friends?" I asked.
"Yeah before I slept with your boyfriend," Haley said, laughing like it was some joke. Haley had no filter, she said whatever she wanted.
"Yeah. And why did you sleep with him? You literally had all the senior guys to choose from, why did you have to steal mine?" I asked.
