I knocked on the door to Dr. Carolin's office. She opened it up and said "My, my, Wesley James look at you! You're starting to get your natural glow back. Watch out ladies, Mr. Pretentious is healthy and well," Dr. Carolin said theatrically.
"Thanks Dr. Carolin, may I sit down?" I asked politely.
"Anything for you," she said with a cheery voice. Either Dr. Carolin was drunk or she had a nice time with a nice fella last night.
"Okay cut the crap, what's really going on?" I asked.
Dr. Carolin's face dropped to the unusual one eyebrow up, one eye squinted look.
"Okay, you got me, I'm actually rather upset that you're in my office today," she said.
"That's the Dr. Carolin I know and hate," I said sarcastically.
"If we are being kind to one another, let me be the first to say that I'm happy you are healthy. Your mom called a few weeks ago and had to reschedule some appointments because she said you weren't taking the treatments as well as you should have been," she said crossing one leg over the other.
"And you Miss Clara Carolin are looking very..... beautiful these days," I said as I was lost for words.
"Let us get back on track. First of all it's still Dr. Carolin to you, and second of all, thank you, your charm is very dangerous. So Wesley, what's new in your life?" She asked ready to take notes.
"I'm almost in remission, my mom is pregnant, I have a huge crush on my nurse who's only a little bit older than I am, I got offered a scholarship to Stanford University, and I have an interview on Wednesday about another huge scholarship opportunity coming this fall," I said proudly.
"Incredible. Just remarkable. Wesley you are a fine, young man, are your parents excited for you?" She asked.
"That's the thing Dr. Carolin, I'm more of a hazard in their life rather than a concern. They don't show much excitement over anything I do."
When I asked my doctor when I could go back to the gym, my mom winced at the thought of heavy stone falling on me and killing me. When I asked about being able to drive, my dad said it was too risky. When I asked if my sperm count would be affected because of the chemo, my dad instantly wanted to know who I had planned to sleep with when I regained my strength. There was no planning for the future, everything was right now, and everything was hazardous to my health.
"How's the situation with Mariah?" She asked.
I smiled because I didn't want to be rude, but my mind wanted the focus to be off of Mariah.
"That's okay, we don't have to talk about her. Tell me about this nurse you have a crush on!"
"Nurse Olivia, she's beautiful," I said in a shy voice. "She has a boyfriend though, and she's twenty-two."
"Why do you like her so much?" Dr. Carolin asked suspiciously.
"Because she's different."
"Most women are, versus a high school girl," Dr. Carolin pointed out.
"Her tone, the way she carries herself, the way she can strike up a conversation with anyone she meets, it's all different. It's like God hand-picked her to be this radiant person and said no, no, no, you can look but you can't touch. My whole cancer treatments have been amazing because of her. I even threw up on her and she managed to look past it!"
"Did you just say you threw up on her? Didn't you throw up on Mariah too? You must either have bad aim or like to bring on the charm in revolting ways," Dr. Carolin said shaking her head.
