"Mariah, can you come here please," my mother said as she was sorting through yesterday's mail. I didn't want to be bothered or get up from the couch, but I was worried that my mom found out about last week's party.

"Yeah?" I answered back.

"Hey, when were you going to show me this?" She stood with one hand on her hip, holding a letter in the other hand.

I rolled my eyes thinking this isn't a big deal. "Mom, when are you ever here to show you these things?" I said out loud.

"Excuse me! Do not talk to me like that! I am your mother, and I work too damn hard for you to treat me the way you do. The nice house you live in sweetie, the fashionable clothes you wear, all of it, because of me. The reason I'm supposedly never here, is because of you!" She got louder by the second. I grabbed my stuff for school, and walked out the door. Why am I never good enough?

My mother and I always got into fights. We fought over the dumbest things, but mainly it came down to the fact that she chose her career over my sister and me. My sister was away at Colorado Springs University. She got out in time. My mom was upset that I didn't show her the award I won. It was an award I won while entering an essay contest which could have possibly led to good scholarships for college. I didn't think it was a big deal to show my mom because she was never impressed by my awards, she always thought I could aim higher.

When I got to school, I put on my brave face, touched up my makeup and I was ready to face the day.

"Hey girl hey!" Callie said as she always does. It was the same every day. Callie would greet me by my locker, we would talk about our boyfriends together, and when the bell rang, we would go our separate ways until lunch time reunited us. I had first period with Alex, she was my best friend. Callie and I were friends, but Alex was the one I could trust the most. Alex wasn't your typical, normal girl. She stayed away from drama, and always had her face buried in a book.

I walked into first period English class and found Alex studying, again. "Hey, there's this party on Friday, you should come with Wesley and me. I can totally set you up with someone great!" I suggested.

"A party? Yeah because I'm so the partier type." She said sarcastically.

I placed my hand on her books. "Look you need to get out more, you're going to look back on your high school career and think 'I was such a loser' if you don't get out and experience these things. Please come with us!" I kept begging her.

She smiled because she knew I was right. "What time? Whose party is it? Will there be alcohol? Should I bring my pepper spray?" I knew she would ask all these questions, so I had an answer for all of them.

"10. Jeremy Fish, he's a senior over at Lincoln High, and the Co-Captain of Wesley's lacrosse team. Yes to the alcohol, but you don't have to drink it. And it wouldn't be a bad idea if you wanted to bring the pepper spray. How did I do?"

"Okay, I'll go on one condition."

She always drove a hard bargain.

"What?" I asked.

"Don't ditch me so you and Wesley can go make out or whatever you guys do."

I rolled my eyes at her for thinking she knew what Wesley and I did.

"I won't, you'll be my date, and Wesley will be the tag along, deal?"

"Deal!" She said with a forced smile. Normally it took several days of convincing for me to get Alex to do fun things, but I think she realized she needed some fun. The party scene wasn't Wesley's thing, it was more of my thing. Although when Wesley walked in the room, guys and girls wouldn't leave him alone. It was a combination of hugs, high fives, and pick up lines. The cool thing about Wesley was that he would stop, reach his hand for mine, and pull me close so we could walk in together. He never left my side, unless I told him to give me my space. The little things were so important to me. I didn't realize how important they were until I met Wesley.
