Almost a month had passed since Sharon James was arrested. Wesley hadn't said much other than thanking me for calling the police that night..
"Hey Mariah, can you restock room 5 with gauss?" Dr. Burns asked. I went to the supply closet and realized the gauss was much higher up than I could reach. I jumped, but I still wasn't tall enough. I grabbed a stool and stood on it, and reached my hand as far as I could to grab the gauss, when one of the nurses came by and closed the door on me. I was knocked off the stool and had packages of gauss fall on me. It was dark in the closet. I started pounding on the door for someone to open it up. Sure enough Wesley came to my rescue.
"Finally coming out of the closet Rye?" Wesley asked making another one of his dumb jokes.
"Oh, you're so funny! Help me up," I demanded.
"Excuse me? I don't take orders from you."
"Please, help me up?" I asked kindly. Wesley pulled me to my feet and walked away. I followed him to go sort through the stack of papers Dr. Griggs left for us.
"Hey, can I help?" I asked
"Sure. I'm on the C's, you can start organizing the D's in alphabetical order," he said handing me the papers.
There were so many D's, I had to spread all the papers out just to find a starting point.
"So how did find out about this internship?" I asked.
Wesley looked so focused, not wanting to be bothered. "Wesley?"
"Rye, please if you want to make small talk, then lets carpool sometime and talk, but I need to focus right now," he said.
"How about today, I can give you a ride home after work?" I offered.
"Sure, that will work, thank you," he said going back to sorting papers. I looked at the clock and we still had another hour of work. I remembered I still needed to stock room 5 with gauss. I grabbed the gauss and knocked on room 5 to make sure there was no one in there. I didn't hear any movement so I walked in and found Dr. Burns sitting at the computer.
"Oh, sorry, I didn't hear you, I'll come back," I said.
"Mariah come in, and bring the gauss." I awkwardly walked in and stocked the gauss back in the cabinets. Dr. Burns continued to type. He took off his glasses and started talking to me.
"Have you ever been in love before?" He asked.
"Uh... yes," I answered.
"In your time of love, did you or your lover ever throw things at each other?"
"Yes, actually," I laughed.
"Why?" Dr. Burns said.
"Well, for me it was because I loved him so much that I wanted him to stop making stupid decisions, so throwing his phone against the wall was my attempt at getting him to open his eyes and be better."
"Wow! Girl power!"
"Dr. Burns do you have a family?" I asked curiously.
"I do, I have a beautiful wife, and two sweet girls. There are pictures all over my office, have you never seen them?" He asked.
I shook my head no, because I had never had the privilege of going into his or Dr. Burns' office. Dr. Burns had an appointment to attend to, and I left to go file with Wesley.
"Hey, you two are free to go. We are closing early, you can leave the papers, and pick up where you left off tomorrow," Dr. Griggs said.
"Thank you," Wesley and I said. Wesley grabbed his stuff and we walked to my car. He beat me to the driver's side, and I thought he wanted to drive, so I threw him the keys.
