*Ava's POV*
I'll never forget the day my world began to unravel. It started with a text message to Myer, my best friend since childhood. My thumbs hovered over the screen as I debated whether to send it.
"I need to tell you something, Myer. Luke's changing. He's becoming...aggressive." The words seemed to stare back at me, daring me to hit send. My conscience screamed yes, but fear whispered no. What if Luke found out? What if Myer didn't believe me?
I took a deep breath and sent the message. The response was immediate.
Maya: "What do you mean? What's going on?" Her concern was palpable, even through the screen.
I bit my lip, unsure how much to reveal. Should I tell her about Luke's mood swings, his increasingly short temper, or the way he looked at me sometimes? Before I could respond, my phone rang.
The anonymous number flashed on the screen, sending a shiver down my spine.
"Hello?" I answered cautiously.
"Ava," a low, menacing voice whispered, making my heart sink.
"Luke?" I tried to sound calm, but my voice trembled.
"How did you know?" He chuckled, the sound sending chills down my spine.
"What do you want, Luke?" I demanded, trying to hide the fear creeping in.
"Listen carefully, Ava. I have an offer for you," he said, his tone dripping with malice.
"I'm listening," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"You know Myer values your friendship above everything, right?" Luke's voice was laced with venom.
"What's that got to do with anything?" I asked warily.
"I'll make you a deal, Ava. Help me with something, and I'll make sure Maya never finds out about your little secret." Luke's words sent a chill down my spine.
"What secret?" I played dumb, but my heart raced.
"Don't pretend, Ava. I know all about your feelings for Maya. And I know she'd drop you in an instant if she found out." Luke's words cut deep.
I felt trapped, cornered by his manipulation.
"What do you want me to do?" I reluctantly asked.
"I'll tell you soon enough. Just remember, this stays between us. Maya can never know." Luke's tone turned sinister.
Before I could respond, he hung up.
I stood there, frozen, my mind reeling with the implications.
What had I just gotten myself into?
Days passed, and I heard nothing from Luke. The silence was oppressive, making me wonder what he had planned. Maya noticed my distraction in our multiple video calls and asked if everything was okay. I brushed it off, unsure how to confide in her without risking Luke's wrath.
One evening, as I walked home from school, Tyler, Luke's twin brother, approached me.
"Hey, Ava. What's going on?" Tyler asked, his expression curious.
"Just school stuff," I replied, trying to sound casual.
Tyler's eyes narrowed. "You're not still worried about Luke, are you?"
My heart skipped a beat. Did Tyler know about the call?
"No, why would I be?" I feigned nonchalance.
Tyler shrugged. "Just making sure. Luke's been acting weird lately."
We walked in silence for a moment before Tyler spoke up.
"Ava, can I ask you something?"
"Sure," I replied hesitantly.
"Do you think Myer would ever...you know, consider me?" Tyler's voice was laced with vulnerability.
My mind reeled. Tyler had feelings for Maya? This was a complication I hadn't anticipated.
I hesitated, unsure how to respond. Tyler's confession put me in an awkward position.
"Tyler, I...I don't know," I stammered.
He nodded understandingly. "It's okay. I just needed to ask."
As we parted ways, my mind whirled with the implications. Tyler's feelings for Maya added a new layer of complexity to the situation. I couldn't shake the feeling that Luke's plan involved using Tyler somehow.
That evening, I received a text from Luke:
"Meet me at the park at 8 pm. Come alone."
My heart sank. This was it – the moment I'd been dreading.
I considered confiding in Myer or Tyler, but Luke's warning echoed in my mind. If I involved them, I risked losing Myer's trust forever.
At 8 pm, I made my way to the park, my senses on high alert.
Luke waited in the shadows, his eyes gleaming with an unsettling intensity.
"So, Ava," he began, his voice low and menacing, "are you ready to hear my proposal?"
"I'm listening," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Good," Luke replied, his smile twisted. "Here's the deal. You'll help me take down Tyler, and in return, I'll keep your secret safe."
My eyes widened. "Take down Tyler? What do you mean?"
Luke's expression turned cold. "Tyler thinks he's better than me, but he's not. He's weak. And with your help, I'll prove it."
I felt a chill run down my spine. "How do you plan to do that?"
Luke leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper. "We'll sabotage his chances with Maya. Make her see him for the loser he is."
My mind reeled. This was insane.
"Why are you doing this, Luke?" I demanded.
His eyes flashed with anger. "Because Tyler thinks he can steal everything from me – Maya, our parents' attention...everything. But I'll show him. I'll show them all."
I realized Luke's plan went far beyond mere sibling rivalry.
"What's in it for you?" I asked, stalling for time.
Luke's grin returned. "Oh, Ava. You'll see. When Tyler falls, I'll rise. And you'll be right by my side...or else."
The threat hung in the air like a challenge.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed through the park. Luke's head jerked toward the sound.
"Maya?" I whispered, my heart racing.
Luke's eyes narrowed. "You didn't tell her, did you?"
I shook my head frantically. "No, I swear."
The footsteps drew closer. Luke's grip on my arm tightened.
"Whatever happens next," he whispered, "remember, you're mine now."
And with that, the darkness seemed to close in around me.
As the figure emerged from the shadows, Luke's smile grew wider.
"Perfect timing," he whispered.
Maya's voice called out, "Ava? Is that you?"
I tried to respond, but Luke's grip silenced me.
And then, everything went black.
