I tried to process Luke's proposal, but my mind reeled with the implications. What did he mean by "taking down" Tyler? And what secret was he using to blackmail me?
"Good," Luke replied, his smile twisted. "Here's the deal. You'll help me sabotage Tyler's chances with Maya. Make her see him for the loser he is."
My eyes widened. "Why would I do that?"
Luke's expression turned cold. "Because if you don't, I'll tell Maya about your feelings for her. And trust me, Ava, she'll drop you like a hot potato."
I felt a chill run down my spine. Luke had me cornered.
"What makes you think Maya would even consider Tyler?" I asked, stalling for time.
Luke snorted. "Please, Ava. I've seen the way she looks at him. She's just waiting for an excuse to ditch you and go after him."
His words cut deep, but I knew I couldn't trust Luke.
"What's in it for you?" I demanded.
Luke's grin returned. "Oh, Ava. When Tyler falls, I'll rise. And you'll be right by my side...or else."
The threat hung in the air like a challenge.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed through the park. Luke's head jerked toward the sound.
"Maya?" I whispered, my heart racing.
Luke's eyes narrowed. "You didn't tell her, did you?"
I shook my head frantically. "No, I swear."
The footsteps drew closer. Luke's grip on my arm tightened.
"Whatever happens next," he whispered, "remember, you're mine now."
And with that, everything went black.
When I came to, I was lying on the park bench, my head throbbing. Luke was nowhere to be seen, but Maya stood over me, concern etched on her face.
"Ava, what happened?" she asked, helping me sit up.
I tried to remember, but my mind was foggy.
"I...I don't know," I stammered.
Maya's eyes narrowed. "Was Luke here?"
I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal.
"No," I lied, trying to sound convincing.
Maya's expression softened. "Let's get you home."
As we walked, I couldn't shake the feeling that Luke was watching us.
Over the next few days, strange things began to happen. Tyler would cancel plans at the last minute, citing mysterious reasons. Maya seemed distant, preoccupied.
And Luke's messages continued, each one more menacing than the last.
"You're doing great, Ava. Keep up the good work."
But what work? I hadn't done anything.
It wasn't until I stumbled upon a conversation between Maya and Tyler that the pieces fell into place.
"Maya, I don't understand," Tyler said, frustration etched on his face. "One minute you're interested, the next you're avoiding me."
Maya's expression was sympathetic. "Tyler, I'm sorry. I think we're better off as friends."
I felt a pang of guilt. Had Luke's plan already worked?
Determined to uncover the truth, I began digging into Luke's past.
