"Pick one yet?" John asks walking into the house, Tate had a stack of donuts in front of him, Tessa sat across a glass of water in her hand.

"Hard to tell which one's the biggest." Tate replies

"Yeah, I know." John agrees

"They're all pretty fat." Tate adds

"How about we line them up in a row, and then the biggest will be easier to spot then." Suggests John

"You can do that?" Asks Tate

"Yeah. Grandson, you can... You can do whatever you want." John reassured him standing up, he crossed the table bobbing down next to Tessa, she was running a fever, her eyes had dark bags underneath. She didn't look very well.

"How come Tessa hasn't got to go to school?" Asked Tate still trying to decided what donut was bigger.

"She's not feeling well." John tells him

"Oh." TAte muttered taking a bite from his chosen donut.

"Go jump in the car your mum will take you to school."

"See your grandpa, see you Tess!" Tate smiles jumping up and running off.

"Go back to bed Tess." John tells her, she nods, slowly standing up disappearing down the hall.

Tess didn't bother to sit up as there was a gentle knock on the door, it opened and John walked in. She was lying in her bed holding her teddy bear close, tears stained her flushed face.

"How are you honey?" He asked gently sitting down on the edge off her bed, he handed over a glass of water and more pain killers

"Apart from the fact I feel like a druggie, I'm alright." She muttered, John gently reached for her shoulder, barely touching it; "mother fucker!" Tessa yelled out in pain

"Do you need anything?" John asks

"Just stay here for a bit." Tessa says quietly, sounding like a small child again.

"Have you looked at your shoulder today?" John asks after a minute.

"No I can't touch it." Tessa tells him, "it's too sore."

"Can I take your temperature?" John asks, Tessa gives a nod.

John angrily threw his hat at the kitchen counter knocking over a few glasses as he followed Beth into the kitchen.

"You embarrassed me, Beth." John tells her, as he fills up a glass with water.

"She's not who you think she is." Beth tries to tel him.

"She's exactly who I think she is." John snaps back. "She's just not who you think she is. She's my friend. Your friend, too, if you bothered to notice."

"It's not casual to her." Beth says

"Well, I don't know what to tell you, Beth." John says angrily, "If the governor's not good enough for you, please explain your standards."

"My standard is my mother." Beth tells him John slams his fist down breaking the glass in his hand

"Now, you're the only child I have tough enough to take this advice." John says stepping closer to Beth, "Now, you need to man up, you understand? You need to man up, be a part of the solution, or go back to fucking Utah! And don't you ever mention your mother to me again. You forfeited that right a long time ago."
