Under a blanket of red

"Tess." Kash began, as she walked into his bedroom after they had eaten dinner.

"What's happened?" Tessa questions instantly noticing the scared look on his face.

"You know I love you Tessa." Kash muttered

"What have you done?" Tessa repeated

"At Eliza's birthday, I got smashed..."

"That's expected." Tessa muttered, confused as to where this was going.

"And I went to bed, and passed out, I got some girl pregnant." Kash said quietly

"You were asleep?" Tessa double cheeked, before she lost her shit.

"Yes." Kash confirmed, "there was no permission given, I was too drunk to fight her off."

"Ok." Tessa breathed out, "have you gone to the police."

"Tess... this is my unborn child, I can't send her mother jail. The babies going to need both parents." Tessa let her face drop, she knew where this was going.

"Your breaking up with me for her aren't you?" She questioned

"I just need to try, I don't want my child to not know me." Kash tells her

"I'm not doing this." Tessa throws her hands up, "I have zero problem with you getting to know your child, it's the fact your choosing the lady that you got pregnant over me. I'm done."

"Tess, wait." Kash attempted to stop her, but she was already out the door.

"Thank you for dinner." Tessa smiled to Mrs Barrett, before grabbing her hat and jacket of the rack and leaving.

"Good night, baby girl." John muttered as Tessa walked into his bed room, her eyes red.

"Good night, Daddy." Beth replied, as John reached for the light switch.

"Tess?" John asked, "I thought you were coming back tomorrow morning

"I was." The girl replied, sadness in her voice

"Tessa, what happened?" Asked Beth standing  up to face her

"Kash got some girl pregnant, he says he was too drunk to push her off." Tessa explains, "I was willing to work with that, but he said he wants to try work things out with her, be there for the child."

"So he broke up with you?" Beth questioned

"You're not fucking listening." Tessa raised her voice, "he's choosing to be with her over me, we're done. I'm going to bed." The girl adds before walking off.

"Come on! Come on, Shad." Teeter cheered the horse and rider on, as they waited for the calf to be released on the TV.

"Tessa, what's up?" Ryan turned to her as she walked in.

"I need someone to have a beer with." The girl replied

"Yeah... I heard about Kash..." Ryan awkwardly trailed off, Tessa gave a shrug.

"Is what it is."

"Hurry it the fuck up, you're going to miss it!" Colby yells to Tessa and Ryan, "Come on!"

"We're watching his cousin." Ryan tells Tessa, as he hands her a beer.

"That's your cousin?" Tessa eyed Colby and then back at the TV.

"Yep." Colby nods, "Show them how to do it, smooth run. Smooth run. Clean. I want it clean. Do a clean run for me this time. Watch this." Colby cheered on the TV, "It's all we need, he just got to get this one. Watch how smooth this is, watch this. Come on. Come on, come on!"

The calf is realised from the chute, and Shad took off roping the calf before jumping off his horse and tying up the calf.

"That's roping, motherfucker!" Colby cheered

"Damn, that's good." Ryan admits, "Clearly, the ability to rope is not hereditary."

"What, what?" Colby exclaims, "fuck you.

"I can out-rope your fucking ass." Ryan tells him

"In what fucking world" Colby questions, "can you out-rope me?"

"In any world." Ryan deadpanned, "Literally on any fucking planet. I'll take you to outer-space and I'll out-rope your fucking ass in outer-space. I don't care."

"What the hell kind of roping are you going to do in outer space?" Jake questions, "It's called gravity."

"What the fuck are you all talking about, roping in fucking space?" Teeter questions

"He is!" Jake pointed to Colby

"That's fucking insane." Teeter yelled

"Buncha haters." Ryan muttered

"You have the same DNA as that man?" Tessa questioned

"Not hungry?" John asks as Beth stared at her computer, John and Tessa eating their breakfast.

"I'm intermittent fasting." Beth muttered

"What's that mean?" Tessa asked glancing up confused

"Uh, nothing but coffee and cigarettes 'til noon, and then I can eat what the fuck I want  until I start drinking at six." Beth tells her

"Well, I'd like to meet the doctor who came up with that diet." John replied taking a mouthful of food.

"I've adapted it a bit to suit my lifestyle." Beth adds

"What are you working on today?" John asks

"I got a few irons cooking." Beth tells him

"What irons?" John asked suspiciously

"I'd rather ask for forgiveness than permission on these, Daddy." Beth admits, "If you don't mind."

"I do mind. What irons?" John questions

"I'm taking the job at Market Equities." Beth gives in.

"Mmm." John hummed, "So take the job, then what?  Tell me how that helps us."

"It helps us when I run it into the fucking ground." Beth responds, "What are you doing today, Tess, recovering from our first heartbreak?"

"Trust me I did that last night." Tessa replied, "beers in the bunkhouse fix everything. what are you doing, Daddy?"

"Battling my conscience." John replies

"Mmm.  Well, I'd offer advice, Dad, but
I've never been in that situation." Beth tells him, standing up, "I gotta go. Love you." She kissed his forehead before walking out

"Off to ruin a life." Beth muttered

"Okay, honey." John merely shrugged. He glanced over at Tessa thinking to himself before shaking his head, "fuck it."

"Where are you going?" Tessa asked

"I'll be back later." He told her before walking out.
