Meaner than evil

"Sorry, sir. You're not eating breakfast?" Gator asked as John walked into the dining room, Tessa trailing tiredly behind

"No, I slept in today." John tells him, "For the last time, I got a feeling."

"Can I have some Choco Chimps?" Tate asks walking as well and pulling up a seat.

"Yeah, sure." Gator nods

"That sounds pretty good. How about three of those, Gator?" John asks

"You don't want some tasty bacon or I got..." suggested Gator

"No, I think Choco Chimps this morning." John repeats, Gator nods before waking out

"Seems me and Tess are not the only one sleeping in these days." John looks towards Tate taking a sip of his coffee.

My alarm didn't go off." Tate tells him

"And why... why are you setting an alarm?" John asks

"My mum's my alarm." Tate explains

"My daddy's my alarm." Tessa tells him liking towards John

"She goes off at 6:00 A.M. whether I like it or not." Tate adds, "Today, she slept in. God, I love summer."

"I do, too.l Tessa agreed, "I hate for it to end."

"Yeah." Tate agreed

"This is, for the record..." Gator begins placing a carton of milk and box of cereal on the table.

"It's going to be fine, Gator." John reassured pouring the bowls

"Milk?" John asks Tate, as he pushed Tessa's bowl to her

"Just a little." Tate responds

"Can I finish my breakfast?" John asks not even bothering to look at Kayce when she walks in

"It's important." Kayce tried

"I thought you were at work." Tate looked towards his dad

"Hey." Kayce kissed his forehead, "Do me a favor, today, buddy, and stay inside, okay?"

"Inside the house?" Tate asked

"Yeah, just... Watch a movie or something." Kayce tells him

"I'm going to finish my breakfast, then I'll be down." John reassures

"Meet me at the barn." Kayce nods before walking out.

"Something's wrong." Tate states slumping back in his chair.

"Looks that way." John agreed, Tate looking worried

"Hey, it's gonna get soggy." Tessa changed the subject pointing to Tates bowl with her spoon.

The boy sighing before taking a spoonful of his cereal.

"Feels wrong, sitting here eating dinner when we should be down there dealing with..." Kayce began everyone sat around the dinner table.

"Kayce." John warns

"Dealing with what?" Tate asked

"How was your day, honey?" John changed the subject turning to Beth

"I got fired." Beth states

"I guess we won't talk about that either." Tessa muttered

"Let's just continue with the illusion that we're one big, happy family." Beth adds

"That's exactly what this family is." John replies "Well, that's exactly what it was." He added

"I don't know what the fuck to call it anymore." Beth states

"That's it. That's fucking it." John began to stand

"No, please." Beth said standing up, "Allow me." And with that she walked out.

"Come on, Tate." Monica adds the two of them standing and leaving as well.

"And that's why we don't talk about business at the dinner table." John looks towardsKayce

"Won't do it again." He reassured, "I'll go check on Tate."

"You do that." John agrees, Kayce getting up to leave as well.

"So..." Tessa trailed off, John giving a nod before the two finished there dinner in silence.
