"Later that Day"
After picking up Alison, Henry turned to Jacob. "Call Jake and let him know the mission was a success," Henry said, his voice tense but controlled.
Jacob nodded and quickly dialed Jake's number. The phone rang once, twice—no answer. He tried again. Still nothing.
"Nobody's picking up," Jacob said, a hint of worry creeping into his tone.
Henry's eyes narrowed. "That's not like him. Try again," he ordered, his mind already racing with possibilities of what could be wrong. His unease grew as Jacob redialed, his fingers moving faster with each failed attempt.
"Try calling the others—Ryan, Rose, Andrew, or Agnes. Someone's got to pick up," Henry said, frustration creeping into his voice.
Jacob quickly scrolled through his contacts and called Ryan. No answer. He tried Rose. Nothing. Andrew and Agnes? Silence.
"They're not picking up either," Jacob muttered, concern evident in his voice.
Henry clenched his fists, his mind racing. "Something's wrong. We need to find them. Now."
Henry drifted his car around the corner, tires screeching as he floored the gas pedal. His heart raced, and he barely noticed the city lights blurring past. Ryan's house loomed in the distance. As soon as he reached the driveway, Henry slammed the brakes and jumped out of the car, with Jacob following close behind. They rushed to the front door, but as Henry pushed it open, the house was eerily silent.
"No one's here," Jacob said, glancing around the empty living room. Henry felt a cold knot form in his stomach. "Where the hell did they go?"
While four of the students—Mia, Paul, Gally, and Stefan—decided to blow off some steam before laying low, they rented a car and hit the countryside for a carefree road trip. Music blared through the car speakers as the open road stretched ahead of them, far from the tension of the city. They passed a bottle of whiskey between them, laughing and joking like there were no consequences waiting for them in three days.
"Well, just three days left, and then we'll be on our own," Mia slurred, leaning back against the seat, her eyes half-closed as she grinned lazily. "Finally, I'll never have to see any of your faces again!" She burst into laughter, sticking her head out the window, the cool air whipping through her hair. "Fuck you, J.D.!" she shouted into the wind, her voice echoing across the empty road.
Everyone joined in, their drunken laughter filling the car. Paul, with a beer in hand, added, "To never looking back!" They all raised their drinks, toasting to a future where they could finally leave everything behind—even if it was just for the 1 day.
As everyone rested by the peaceful lake, the soft glow of the setting sun casting a golden hue across the water, Paul looked at Mia with a serious expression. The carefree laughter and drunken fun from earlier had faded into the quiet sounds of nature. Paul turned to Mia and, with a somber tone, asked, "You said you're never gonna see our faces again. Did you mean that?"
Mia, trying to lighten the mood, smiled and playfully tapped his shoulder, letting out a small giggle. "You know I was joking. I love you so much," she whispered as she hugged his arm tightly, her eyes fixed on the calm surface of the lake.
Paul's eyes softened as he pulled her closer, kissing the top of her head. "I love you too," he replied, wrapping his arms around her. But as they sat there in the embrace, Mia's expression shifted. She stared out at the lake, her voice barely a whisper, "I'm tired of running, Paul."
Paul gently pulled her away, grabbing her shoulders as concern flickered in his eyes. "I told you to come with me, just one last time. Run away with me, Mia. We'll be happy. We don't need these guys." His voice was full of pleading hope. He searched her eyes for a spark of agreement, his grip tightening slightly. "How about it? One last run. No turning back. Just you and me."
