"Sir..." Garcia knocks on my door
"Yes?" I reply
"Last week you told me to comb through VICAP to find other cases where the MO matches Louisiana's Black Widow..." she mentions
"And?"
"I found over 20 of those all over the country" she reveals, placing a thick file in front of me
"Over 20...?" I sigh, shocked
"Yeah. 26 in total, including the Louisiana ones".
"Thank you, Garcia. I will have a look and see what we can do. Until then, we'll be working on other more urgent cases" I state
"Alright. Is there anything else you need right now, sir?"
"No, you can go home"
She nods, "Have a good night, sir"
"You too".
26 murders, over the last 10 years, all over the country. Apart from the first three murders in Louisiana, the Black Widow never killed in the same state in a row and never in the same town. She never left a clue behind; no fingerprints, no DNA, not even a single strand of hair. All victims were found in hotel rooms in book under their names. No consistent description of her was given. She knows how to clean up after herself and go unnoticed.
I close the file. With a long sigh, I sit back in my chair. This is much bigger than we originally thought.
I decide to take the file with me for tonight. So I grab my things and I leave. I drive all the way back home, but I pause before stepping out of the car. My eyes land on the thick file on the passenger seat, and I feel a pit in my stomach.
I take a deep breath. Instead of going in my apartment, I head to a bar a few blocks away. As soon as I arrive, I sit at the bar and order a glass of whiskey.
And then I order a second one.
"Two tequila shots" I hear a familiar voice a couple of seats down on my right.
I see her but she doesn't see me. I watch her finish her first shot the same second the bartender sets it down. She doesn't even seem fazed. And then she picks up the second shot.
"I hope you're not driving, Ms. Wade" I speak up
She turns to see me. "I'd say the same for you, Agent" she chuckles
My lips curve up slowly.
She takes her things and moves to the chair next to me. Her figure is clearer now. She wearing black pants and a t-shirt. Her hair is pulled back in a ponytail. My best guess is that she just finished work too.
"Rough day?" I ask her
"You can say that. I was working a wedding downtown today. The bride was so beautiful, the ceremony was dreamy and everything was so romantic. It reminded me how truly lonely I am" she admits.
"You're not alone right now. I hope sitting here with me isn't that bad" I point out
"You're right. And it certainly helps that you're pretty easy on the eyes" she replies
"If by pretty easy you mean overworked and lacking of sleep, then sure" I reply, looking down at my glass
"You and me both" she chuckles
"You don't look like it"
"I am good at my job, that's why" she reminds me
"Right..." I laugh. "How about you? Rough day too?" she asks
