Evelyn stood by the window, the cold glass pressing against her forehead as she stared into the night.

It had been months since that night—the night her world shattered into pieces. And yet, despite everything, despite the betrayal, despite the pain that tore her apart from the inside out,

she still loved him.

She hated herself for it.

How could she still love someone who had hurt her so deeply, someone who had slept with another, who had thrown her love back in her face like it meant nothing?

She clenched her fists, the nails digging into her palms.

She had tried—oh, how she had tried—to erase him from her life, from her thoughts, from her heart.

She told herself, over and over, that she would never approach him again, that he didn’t deserve her. He wasn’t worth it. But every time she saw him, whether in passing or in the media, her heart betrayed her.

The sight of his face, those grey eyes, the memory of his touch—it all came flooding back, and it took everything in her to hold herself together, to pretend that he didn’t exist, that she didn’t care.

She ignored him, ignored his existence, no matter how much it hurt. She forced herself to move on. But the pain never went away. It was always there, lingering just beneath the surface, threatening to consume her whole.

At night, as she lay in bed, a message from Nathan’s manager lit up her phone. She stared at it for a moment, her heart racing as her fingers hovered over the screen.

She knew she shouldn’t open it, knew that whatever the message said would only bring more pain. But she couldn’t help herself. Her curiosity, or perhaps her love, won out in the end.

*“Nathan’s leaving the industry. He’s stepping away for good.”*

Evelyn’s heart stopped.

She read the message again, and again, disbelief flooding through her. Nathan was leaving? Leaving his career, leaving everything behind?

Before she knew it, she was on her feet, her body moving on autopilot. She grabbed her jacket, not even thinking about what she was doing. Her legs carried her down the street, each step heavy with the weight of unspoken emotions. She was going to him. She had to.

By the time she reached his house, her breath was ragged, her heart pounding in her chest. She stood outside for a moment, staring at the door.

She shouldn’t be here. She had sworn to herself that she would never go to him again. But her hands trembled as she pulled out the key—the one he had given her so long ago. She hesitated, her thumb brushing against the metal, expecting it to fail.

But the door clicked open.

He hadn’t changed the locks.

She stepped inside, the familiar scent of him hitting her like a tidal wave, overwhelming her senses. But something was different. The house was eerily quiet, and as she looked around, her heart sank.

The place was empty.

Gone were the little details of his life—the books on the shelf, the records he used to play, the jacket he always left draped over the chair. It was all gone.
