Nathan had always believed that love was a weakness.
To open his heart was to give someone the power to destroy him.
So when he started feeling something for Evelyn, something real and dangerous, he did the only thing he knew how to do: he ran.
He built walls around his heart, distancing himself from the one person who could break through them.
At first, it was subtle. He would leave their shared moments a little earlier, his touches would become colder, his words clipped.
But the worst of it was his eyes.
Evelyn noticed the shift immediately. At first, she told herself it was temporary, that whatever was pulling him away from her would pass, but as days turned into weeks, she couldn't ignore it any longer.
Nathan was slipping away.
She had tried everything. She would show up at his house with his favorite meals, offer to spend time together, anything to pull him back into her arms.
But he kept pushing her away, his coldness growing more unbearable with each passing day.
And the more she tried, the more desperate she became, the more frightened Nathan grew.
Seeing her devotion terrified him—made him feel trapped in ways he didn’t understand.
So, he retreated deeper into the night, into places where he didn’t have to feel, where everything was masked by music and alcohol and meaningless encounters.
He started going to nightclubs more often, He thought that losing himself in the thrill of strangers, in the false promises of a life untouched by emotions, would numb the gnawing ache inside him.
But every time he came back, Evelyn was there. Watching. Waiting. And it broke something in her heart each time.
She would see him, disheveled, his eyes cold and distant. she knew where he had been, with whom, but she didn’t say anything.
The pain was too much, but atleast he is not sleeping with other Alphas. So she held it inside, pretending everything was fine, pretending that the omega she loved wasn’t slipping further and further away.
Until one night, everything changed.
Evelyn had spent weeks planning a surprise for Nathan.
It wasn’t just any gift; it was something meaningful.
She remembered a casual conversation they had had long ago, where Nathan had mentioned a rare piece of jewelry—a necklace that was nearly impossible to find.
She had seen a flicker of interest in his eyes when he spoke of it, and it had stayed with her ever since.
She wanted to give him something that showed she truly listened, truly cared, even when he acted as though he didn’t.
It had taken her months of searching, but she finally found it.
A beautiful, rare necklace that she knew would mean the world to him, even if he didn’t show it.
She had also picked out a bouquet of his favorite flowers—delicate white lilies, elegant and timeless, just like him.
She imagined the look on his face when she would surprise him, hoping it might bring a spark of the old Nathan back, the one who made her feel alive.
That night, Evelyn walked to Nathan’s house, her heart racing with anticipation.
She clutched the bouquet and necklace tightly, her hands trembling with a mix of excitement and fear.
