"Do you hear that, boy? Finally, the sound of snow... falling."
Coriolanus couldn't believe this was happening. He was supposed to have a bright future with the prize, a chance to climb the ranks of society. But now, he was being sent to the districts and enlisted as a Peacekeeper. He as though the world had been ripped out from underneath him. To be sent to the very place he used to look down on was like a cruel twist of fate. He stared at the evidence of his foul play in the form of his father's handkerchief being laid out before him by the dean. He was to be exiled from the only life he had ever known.
Even worse, he was sent away from you.
Ten months had passed since Coriolanus began his time serving in Panem's armed forces. Every time he ran his hand through his hair, the prickly sensation of the shaved hair made his heart ache for the longer locks he used to have. It was a visible reminder of the life he had left behind, and a painful one at that.
He missed you more than words could comprehend. Your eyes, the sound of your laugh, the feel of your skin against his...
Dreams of you haunted him nearly at night, your face and voice consuming his thoughts. They left him feeling more hollow and alone when he would awake. He mourned you as if you were dead, in a constant state of misery and despair.
Hitting the showers was the only time of day he was alone and allowed himself to cry. He stood under the shower head, the steam from the hot water surrounding him as he let out deep quiet sobs. The sound of the water rushing down drowned out his cries and granted him a sense of solitude in the small empty space.
He leaned against the cold tile wall, his shoulders shuddering as he released all the pent up emotions he kept at bay during his hours. The water mixed with his tears trailed down his face and disappeared down the drain.
Coriolanus found himself opening up to Sejanus, confiding in him often. He had been forced to serve twenty years as well for breaking into the arena. They became closer together through their situation. Coriolanus had even told him what he had done to you, to which Sejanus said that what he did was bad, but it was a good thing that he felt sorry. Coriolanus had no clue why that even mattered. He would never have an opportunity to ever show you just how regretful he was.
He tried to drown out the memories of you with alcohol and work, but no amount of it could fill the void in his heart. He felt as if he would forever be stuck in this routine, yearning for a woman who he would never see again. Nor did she even want him anymore.
After another difficult day of drills, the other Peacekeepers had invited Coriolanus and Sejanus to join them for a night at district twelves Hob. He had accepted reluctantly. The thought of drinking and socializing at this point in life made his skin crawl, but Sejanus seemed excited to go and he didn't want to ruin his mood.
They made their way to the Hob, the smell of cheap alcohol and smoke assaulting Coriolanus' nose. The place was packed to the brim, the air thick with laughter and live music.
He stayed close to the other Peacekeepers, standing next to the group. His eyes scanned the room as the sipped on a glass of cheap whisky. Sejanus was chatting with some of the other Peacekeepers, but Coriolanus was lost in his own thoughts. As always, he couldn't stop thinking about you. Wondering where you were and if you were happy now.
Out of the corner of his eye, Coriolanus could make out the figure of someone familiar. He had to do a double take. His heart skipped a beat. He stood there stunned for a moment, unsure if he was finally going insane and imagining things. It couldn't be you. It couldn't be.
But it was. The woman serving drinks at the table nearby was unmistakably you.
He swallows hard, turning to Sejanus. "I'll be right back." He says, his voice strained with shock.
