The sun hadn't risen yet, casting the world in shades of deep blue and grey. Elena woke with a start, her pulse racing as the remnants of her dream lingered in her mind. She had been running again—always running—from shadowy figures she couldn't quite see, but whose presence loomed large over her. It was a dream she had grown accustomed to ever since she and Aidan began their investigation, but last night's felt more vivid, more real.
She sat up on the worn couch, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. The room was cold, the draft from the cracked windows making her shiver. Across the room, Aidan was already awake, sitting at the small table they had used to spread out the documents and clippings from the library. His face was illuminated by the dim glow of a flashlight, his brow furrowed in concentration as he scribbled something in a notebook.
"You're up early," Elena said, her voice still groggy.
Aidan glanced up, his expression unreadable. "Couldn't sleep. Too much to think about."
Elena nodded, understanding. The weight of everything they had uncovered so far—the disappearances, the connections between Carter Pierce, Jacob Morris, and now Michael J. Tanner—was enough to keep anyone awake at night. But it wasn't just the weight of the investigation that gnawed at her. It was the fear that they were getting in over their heads.
She stood and walked over to the table, scanning the papers Aidan had been poring over. He had made several new notes, his handwriting messy and hurried, but one name stood out clearly among the scrawls: Michael J. Tanner.
"You've been working on Tanner," Elena observed, her curiosity piqued.
Aidan leaned back in his chair, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah. I've been trying to piece together what little we know about him. There's almost nothing in the public record, but I did find one lead."
He handed her a printout of a newspaper article. It was an old business report, detailing the acquisition of a small real estate firm by Tanner Industries. The name meant little to Elena at first, but as she read further, something clicked.
"This firm..." she said, her eyes narrowing. "It's in the same county where Greywater is located."
Aidan nodded. "Exactly. I think Tanner's been using his company to buy up land for years, but he's been doing it quietly. There's no real paper trail—at least, nothing obvious. It's like he's been trying to stay under the radar."
Elena's mind raced as she considered the implications. If Tanner had been quietly acquiring land around Greywater, it could mean he had been planning something for a long time—something much bigger than just a shady business deal.
"We need to find him," Elena said, her voice firm. "But we can't just go knocking on doors. If Tanner's involved in this, he's dangerous. He won't hesitate to eliminate anyone who gets too close."
Aidan frowned, his expression darkening. "I know. That's why we need to be smart about this. I've been thinking... we can't stay in Rivergate much longer. Those men who attacked us last night—they know we're here. We need to move."
Elena's stomach tightened at the thought. The black car, the shadowy figures—they had barely escaped with their lives. She knew Aidan was right. Staying in Rivergate was too risky now. But the idea of leaving felt like a step backward.
"Where do we go?" she asked, her voice laced with uncertainty.
Aidan stood and began pacing the room, his mind clearly racing. "We need to follow the trail. Tanner's land acquisitions—that's our lead. We need to track down the properties he's bought and see if any of them connect back to Greywater or Pierce."
