Emma's mind raced, her heart beating so loudly in her chest that it drowned out every other sound around her. Dylan stood before her, his presence both a comfort from the past and a terrifying reminder of everything that had gone wrong. She had loved him once, more deeply than she thought possible. But now, standing here in the dim light of the hall, everything about him seemed different—dangerous.
"How... how are you here?" Emma stammered, trying to keep her voice steady, though her insides were shaking uncontrollably. "You disappeared. We thought you were dead."
Dylan's gaze was cold, his eyes narrowing slightly as a dark smile curved at the corner of his lips. The warmth she once knew in him was gone. Replaced by something darker, something that sent chills down her spine.
"I never left, Emma," Dylan replied, his voice low and smooth. "I've been watching, waiting for the right moment to return."
Her breath caught in her throat. Watching? The very idea made her skin crawl. How long had he been lurking in the shadows? How much had he seen? She swallowed hard, trying to push back the rising panic in her chest. This wasn't the Dylan she had once known, but she had to stay strong. She had to protect herself.
"You're not making any sense," Emma said, her voice trembling slightly. "Why are you here now? What do you want?"
Dylan took a step closer, and instinctively, Emma backed away. The room felt smaller with every inch he gained on her. She could sense the tension, the air thick with unspoken threats.
"I want what was always mine," he said, his voice soft but laced with menace. "And you, Emma... you were always mine."
Emma's heart skipped a beat, her stomach twisting in knots. The words felt like ice against her skin. The possessiveness in his tone sent a cold shiver down her spine. She wasn't his. She wasn't anyone's possession. She had fought too hard to reclaim her life after everything had fallen apart.
"No," Emma whispered, shaking her head. "I'm not yours. I'm not that girl anymore."
Dylan's smile faded slightly, and for a moment, his expression shifted—just for a heartbeat, she thought she saw the man she had once loved. The man who had made her feel alive in a way no one else had. But it was gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by the cold, calculating gaze of a stranger.
"I think you've forgotten who you ore.
"I don't need you," Emma said, her voice stronger this time. "Not anymore."
Dylan's eyes flashed with anger, but he masked it quickly, his lips curling into a smirk. "We'll see about that," he said darkly. "You've always been good at lying to yourself, Emma. But the truth will come out sooner or later."
Emma's chest tightened, fear mixing with the memories of the love they had once shared. There had been passion between them—wild, uncontrollable, consuming. She remembered the way he used to look at her, as if she was the only thing that mattered in the world. The connection between them had been intense, magnetic, and undeniable.
But that love had come at a cost. It had been too much, too fast, and in the end, it had nearly destroyed her.
"I don't understand why you're doing this," Emma said, her voice shaking with a mixture of confusion and fear. "You loved me once, Dylan. Why are you trying to hurt me now?"
Dylan's eyes softened, just for a moment, and she saw a flicker of something she recognized—a hint of the man she had fallen for so long ago. But then, his expression hardened once again, and he stepped even closer, the space between them shrinking.
"I did love you," he said quietly, his voice low and dangerous. "But love changes, Emma. And so do people."
Before she could respond, he reached out and grabbed her wrist, his grip tight and unyielding. Emma's heart raced, her body frozen in fear as his fingers dug into her skin. She tried to pull away, but his hold was too strong.
"Let me go," she demanded, panic rising in her throat.
Dylan leaned in, his breath hot against her ear. "Not until you understand," he whispered. "You were always meant to be mine, Emma. And no one—no one—is going to take you away from me."
Emma's heart pounded in her chest, her mind racing with fear and confusion. This wasn't love. This was possession. Obsession. And she couldn't let it consume her.
Suddenly, the door at the far end of the hall burst open, and a figure stepped into the room. Emma's heart leapt with relief as she saw Cale standing there, his eyes wide with shock and fury.
"Let her go!" Cale shouted, his voice echoing through the room.
Dylan's grip tightened for a split second before he released her, stepping back with a smug smile on his face. "Ah, the knight in shining armor," he sneered. "Right on cue."
Emma stumbled back, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. Cale rushed to her side, his hand resting on her shoulder as he glared at Dylan with a fierce intensity.
"You're not welcome here," Cale said, his voice low and dangerous. "Leave. Now."
Dylan's smirk only widened. "I'll leave when I'm ready," he said calmly. "And trust me, this isn't over. Not by a long shot."
Emma's heart sank as Dylan turned and walked away, his presence lingering in the room like a dark shadow. She knew, deep down, that this wasn't the end. He would be back. And next time, he wouldn't be so easy to fight off.
As the door closed behind Dylan, Emma felt a wave of emotions crash over her—fear, confusion, anger, and something else... something she didn't want to admit.
Love.
Despite everything, a part of her still loved him. The memories of their time together, the passion they had shared, lingered in her mind like a haunting melody. But she knew she couldn't go back to that. She couldn't let herself be pulled into the darkness that had consumed him.
Cale turned to her, his eyes filled with concern. "Are you okay?" he asked softly, his hand still resting on her shoulder.
Emma nodded, though her heart was still pounding in her chest. "I will be," she whispered, more to herself than to him.
But even as she said the words, doubt crept into her mind. Dylan's return had shaken her to her core, and she couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible was about to happen. Something that would change everything.
And as she stood there, staring at the door where Dylan had disappeared, she knew that the worst was yet to come.
