The shock of Lily's sudden appearance had rooted Emma to the spot, her mind far away. Her sister, the one person she had loved and mourned for so long, was standing in front of her—alive, breathing, and yet almost unrecognizable. The years had changed her. The softness Emma remembered from childhood was gone, replaced by a cold edge that sent a chill through the room.
Lily's words echoed in Emma's head. The truth about their family. Their destiny. The power that coursed through Emma's veins, the one that had always felt foreign and dangerous, was something far more profound. And yet, none of it made sense. How could her sister know so much about this when she had disappeared years ago?
"Lily... how are you here? Where have you been all these years?" Emma's voice was barely a whisper, her throat tight with emotion. She wanted to run to her, to hold her and make sense of everything, but something about the look in Lily's eyes held her back.
Lily took a slow step forward, her gaze fixed on Emma with unsettling intensity. "There's so much you don't know, Emma. Things that were kept from both of us. But I learned the truth, and now I've come to show you."
Cale's hand twitched by his side, his protective instincts kicking in as he kept himself between Emma and her sister. "You think we're just going to believe you after all these years? You left her. You disappeared without a trace."
Lily's lips curled into a half-smile, but there was no warmth in it. "I didn't leave by choice, Cale. I was taken. Forced into a world that neither of you can fully comprehend." Her eyes flicked toward Emma again. "But now it's time for Emma to know who she is."
Emma's chest tightened as confusion consumed her mind. She had lived her life believing she was one thing—human, albeit with an extraordinary gift. Now, the very foundation of her identity felt like it was crumbling beneath her. Her heart raced with both fear and curiosity. The woman standing before her, who should have been her closest confidant, was now a stranger, holding the keys to a truth Emma wasn't sure she wanted to unlock.
"What do you mean, Lily?" Emma asked, her voice small but steady. "What truth are you talking about?"
Lily's expression softened, just for a moment, and in that brief second, Emma saw a glimmer of the sister she had once known. "Our family comes from a bloodline that carries immense power, but it's been kept hidden for centuries. Our ancestors feared what would happen if it was unleashed. But Emma, you were never supposed to inherit it. That power wasn't meant for you."
The words hit Emma like a punch to the gut. She wasn't supposed to have her powers? She wasn't supposed to be this... this dangerous person? Her hands shook at her sides, her mind racing as the weight of Lily's revelation began to sink in. "Then why do I have it?" she asked, her voice barely audible.
"Because fate has a way of changing things," Lily said quietly. "Something happened, something that shifted the balance. You were given the power instead of me, and now..." She paused, her gaze hardening again. "Now it's your responsibility to control it, or it will destroy everything."
Emma stumbled back, feeling like the ground was slipping from beneath her feet. None of this made sense. How could her entire life be a mistake, an accident of fate? Her breath quickened, panic rising in her chest. She felt like she was drowning in the enormity of it all.
Cale stepped forward, his voice firm but gentle. "Emma, don't listen to her. She's been gone for years—who knows what she's been through or what she's been told. You don't have to accept any of this."
But Emma couldn't ignore the knot in her stomach, the feeling that somehow, deep down, there was truth in Lily's words. She had always felt different like she didn't belong in the life she had known. The power inside her had always felt foreign, uncontrollable like it was waiting for something—waiting to be unleashed.
Lily's eyes softened again as she looked at Emma as if sensing her turmoil. "I know this is hard to understand, Emma. But you need to know the truth, or you'll never be able to control what's coming. I can help you, but you have to trust me."
Trust. The word tasted bitter in Emma's mouth. How could she trust someone who had been gone for so long? Someone who had been forced into a life she knew nothing about? And yet, the desperation in Lily's voice made Emma hesitate. What if she was telling the truth? What if everything Emma had ever believed about herself was a lie?
Before Emma could respond, the door to the room burst open, and a figure stepped inside. It was a man, tall and imposing, with sharp features and dark eyes that flickered with a dangerous intensity. He radiated power, the kind of power that made the air around him hum with energy.
Cale immediately tensed, his body positioning itself protectively in front of Emma once more. "Who the hell are you?" he demanded, his hand moving to the knife at his side.
The man's gaze flicked briefly to Cale before settling on Emma, his expression unreadable. "I'm here for her," he said calmly, his voice low and smooth. "It's time for her to fulfil her destiny."
Emma's heart pounded in her chest as the man's words sent a jolt of fear through her. Who was he? And what did he want with her? The tension in the room was palpable, and Emma could feel the weight of her power thrumming beneath her skin, ready to explode at any moment.
Lily stepped forward, her expression grim. "Don't make this harder than it has to be, Emma. You were never meant to carry this burden, but now that you do, you have to embrace it. You don't have a choice."
Emma's mind raced as she tried to process everything that was happening. Her sister, the power, the man who had just walked in claiming to know her destiny—it was all too much. She wanted to run, to hide, to escape from the weight of it all. But there was no escape. Not anymore.
The man took another step forward, his eyes locked onto Emma's. "Come with me, and I'll show you how to control it. You don't have to be afraid."
Emma's breath caught in her throat as his words echoed in her mind. Control. That was what she had always wanted, wasn't it? To control the power that had threatened to consume her for so long. But something about the man's calm demeanour, his smooth voice, sent a shiver down her spine. There was something off about him, something that made her hesitate.
Cale's hand tightened around the knife, his body tense and ready to strike. "She's not going anywhere with you," he growled, his voice low and dangerous.
The man's eyes flicked to Cale, a hint of amusement in his gaze. "You think you can stop me?" he asked, his voice laced with condescension. "You have no idea what you're dealing with."
Before Cale could respond, the man raised his hand, and a blast of energy shot across the room, knocking Cale back into the wall with a force that made Emma gasp. Cale crumpled to the floor, unconscious.
Emma's heart raced as she stared at the man in shock. He was powerful—far more powerful than anyone she had ever encountered. And now, she was alone with him.
Lily stepped forward, her expression cold. "It's time, Emma. You have to make a choice. Come with us, or face the consequences."
Emma's mind whirled as she tried to make sense of everything. She was out of options, out of time. And as she looked into the eyes of the man who had just taken down Cale with ease, she realized that her life was about to change forever.
The weight of her destiny pressed down on her, suffocating her with its intensity. And in that moment, she knew that whatever choice she made, there would be no turning back.
