Emma sat frozen, the memory of Mara's chilling presence lingering like a dark cloud in the sterile hospital room. Each word Mara had spoken echoed in her mind, stirring a new dread. She glanced at Dylan, his face drained of colour, his eyes fixed blankly on the doorway where Mara had just disappeared.

Finally, she found the courage to break the silence. "Dylan... who is she? And why does she seem to have such power over you?"

Dylan took a shuddering breath, his gaze still focused on the door as though he expected Mara to storm back any second. "She... she's part of my past. The part I never wanted you to see."

Emma's throat tightened as Dylan's words sank in. She tried to keep her voice steady, but the hurt and confusion trembled beneath the surface. "How long were you going to keep it from me, Dylan? I've risked so much... believed in you."

His head turned slowly, and for a brief moment, his eyes softened. "Emma, I never wanted you to be dragged into this mess. I thought I could leave it all behind, and start fresh with you. I thought... I thought I could change."

Emma's heart twisted painfully as she took in his words. She'd seen glimpses of that side of Dylan—moments where he seemed haunted, lost in shadows she could never fully reach. But she'd always hoped he would let her in and trust her enough to let her share his burdens.

"What did she mean?" she asked, swallowing the ache in her throat. "When she said it's time for you to pay up?"

Dylan dropped his gaze, his shoulders sagging with the weight of secrets that had finally come crashing down. "I made mistakes, Emma. Big ones. Mara... she was part of a life I led before I met you. And now she's here to collect on those mistakes."

She closed her eyes for a moment, a mix of anger and pain building up inside her. "I feel like I don't even know who you are anymore."

Just then, the door opened again, this time revealing Cale, who had been waiting outside to give them space. He looked between Emma and Dylan, a question in his eyes as he stepped further into the room.

"What happened?" Cale asked, his gaze intense as he took in the strained silence between them.

Emma forced herself to look up, pushing down the storm of emotions raging within her. "Mara happened," she said simply, her voice cold.

Cale's face tightened. "Mara?"

Dylan nodded, his jaw clenched. "She's back, and she wants something from me."

Cale's gaze darkened. "I told you, Dylan. You can't keep running from your past forever."

Dylan's face hardened, and for a brief moment, Emma saw a side of him she'd never truly seen before—a side hardened by survival, steeped in regret. "I thought I could escape it. But I guess I was wrong."

The words hung in the air, heavy and final. Emma felt a pang of sorrow as she looked at Dylan, a man torn between the life he wanted and the life that was pulling him back into the darkness.

But as the silence stretched on, another feeling started to stir within her. Despite everything, she couldn't ignore the pull she still felt toward him. The fear and anger were real, but so was the love she had tried so hard to fight. And that realization scared her more than anything.

Cale's voice broke the silence. "Emma, maybe you should head home. You've been through enough for one night."

She hesitated, looking back at Dylan. His eyes met hers, a silent plea flickering within them, one that cut through her defences. She could leave, protect herself from the chaos that seemed to surround him, or she could stay—risk her heart and her safety, knowing full well the danger she was stepping into.
