The room seemed frozen in time as Alex stood in the doorway, his chest rising and falling with each ragged breath. The weapon in his hand a long iron rod—glinted in dim light, but it was his expression that sent a chill down Emma's spine. His face, usually so kind and familiar, was now cold and unreadable. The soft, warm eyes she once found comfort in were now filled with something dark, something dangerous.
James tensed, his grip on Emma loosening just enough for her to suck in a deep breath. She tried to move, to push herself off the stone altar, but her body was still weak, her limbs shaking with the effort. Every muscle screamed in protest, but her fear was stronger. She had to get out of there.
Lily moved quickly, stepping in front of James as if to shield him from Alex's sudden arrival. Her eyes flicked between the two men, calculating, waiting for the first move. The air crackled with tension, every second feeling like an eternity.
"Alex," Emma whispered, her voice down, barely above a breath. "Please..."
But Alex didn't move. His gaze shifted from Emma to James, and then to Lily. The silence between them was deafening, the weight of unspoken words hanging in the air. Emma's heart pounded, confusion swirling in her mind. Why wasn't Alex charging in, fighting to save her? Why was he just standing there?
And then, without warning, he spoke.
"You thought you could do this without me?" Alex's voice was low, calm too. It was a tone Emma had never heard from him before, a tone that sent a shiver down her spine.
James let out a short, bitter laugh, stepping away from the altar as if this confrontation was no surprise at all. "It took you long enough," he said, his lips curling into a smirk. "I was starting to think you'd changed your mind."
Emma's breath caught in her throat. Changed his mind? What were they talking about?
Lily crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing as she studied Alex. "You're late," she said, her voice dripping with annoyance. "We've been waiting."
Emma's mind raced, trying to piece together what was happening. Waiting? What did they mean? Alex wasn't here to save her he was a part of this. A deep, unsettling fear twisted in her gut as the realization hit her like a punch to the stomach.
Alex wasn't her saviour.
He was her betrayer.
"Alex...?" Her voice trembled, barely able to get the words out. She didn't want to believe it. She couldn't. This was the man who had been by her side through everything, the man she had trusted, the man she thought she loved. How could he be a part of this?
But the cold, hard truth was staring her in the face. Alex wasn't here to rescue her he was here for the same reason as James and Lily. He had been working with them all along.
"I'm sorry, Emma," Alex said, his voice soft now, almost regretful. "But this is bigger than you. It's bigger than any of us."
Her heart shattered, the pain of his words cutting deeper than any physical wound. She had trusted him. She had believed in him. And now, everything she thought she knew about him, about their relationship, was a lie.
James stepped closer, his smirk widening. "You see, Emma, this was never about rescuing you. This was about the key to the knowledge you hold. And now that Alex is here, we can finally finish what we started."
Emma shook her head, tears blurring her vision. "No," she whispered, her voice cracking. "This can't be happening."
Alex stepped forward, his eyes full of an emotion she couldn't quite read guilt, perhaps, or something far darker. He reached out, but Emma recoiled, pulling herself as far back on the altar as she could manage. She wanted to scream, to fight, but her body was still weak, her strength drained from the ordeal.
Lily rolled her eyes, clearly growing impatient. "Enough of this melodrama," she snapped, striding over to the altar with a cold, predatory grace. "We don't have time for your sentimental nonsense, Alex. She's not going anywhere, and we need to proceed."
Emma's pulse quickened as Lily produced a small, ornate dagger from the folds of her jacket, its silver blade glinting ominously in the dim light. She turned it over in her hand, inspecting it with a satisfied smile. "The ritual needs her blood," Lily said, her voice as smooth as silk. "And once we have that, we'll have the key."
Panic surged through Emma as she struggled against her weakening limbs, desperately trying to pull free from the bonds that still held her in place. The ropes were too tight, too strong. She wasn't going to make it out of this. Not alive, at least.
"Wait." Alex's voice cut through the air, stopping Lily in her tracks. He stepped forward, his eyes never leaving Emma. "Let me do it."
For a brief moment, silence filled the room, thick with tension and unspoken understanding. Lily raised an eyebrow but stepped back, handing the dagger to Alex without a word. Her eyes gleamed with a twisted curiosity, clearly interested in what would happen next.
Alex stood over Emma, the dagger gleaming in his hand. His expression was unreadable, his body tense as if he was waging a war within himself. Emma's heart pounded in her chest, every instinct screaming at her to run, but there was nowhere to go. No escape. She was completely at his mercy.
"Alex, please," Emma whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Don't do this."
He hesitated for the briefest of moments, his grip tightening on the hilt of the dagger. Then, with a deep breath, he raised it high above her, the cold steel catching the light.
Emma squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the inevitable. Her heart raced, her breath shallow as time seemed to slow. Was this it? Was this how her story ended?
And then, just as the dagger began to descend, the door burst open once again, the sound echoing through the room like a thunderclap.
A figure stepped into the room, a shadowy silhouette against the blinding light from the hallway. Emma's heart leapt in her chest as she squinted, trying to make out who it was. For a brief, fleeting moment, she thought she was hallucinating. But as the figure stepped forward, the familiar face came into view.
It was Rachel.
The shock on James's and Lily's faces was immediate, their smug confidence evaporating in an instant. Alex froze, his hand still raised, the dagger poised to strike.
Rachel didn't say a word. She didn't need to. The look in her eyes said everything.
Emma's pulse raced as she realized that Rachel wasn't here just to save her. She was here for something more.
Rachel's gaze flicked to Emma, then to Alex, her expression hardening. "Drop the knife," she said, her voice low and deadly. "Now."
For a moment, no one moved. The tension in the room was suffocating, every breath feeling like a battle. Then, slowly, Alex lowered the dagger, his hand shaking as it fell to the floor with a clatter.
Rachel stepped forward, her eyes never leaving his. "You've made your choice," she said, her voice dripping with disappointment. "And you'll live with the consequences."
Emma's mind reeled as the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. Rachel hadn't just come to save her, she had come to settle a score.
But before Emma could fully comprehend what was happening, a loud crash echoed from behind her, followed by the sound of breaking glass. She turned just in time to see the window above the altar shatter, sending shards of glass raining down around her.
A figure dropped through the window, landing with cat-like precision on the floor in front of her. Emma's breath caught in her throat as the new arrival straightened, revealing a face she had never seen before—yet one that was eerily familiar.
The newcomer's eyes gleamed with a dangerous intensity as they surveyed the room, taking in James, Lily, and Alex in a single glance. And then, with a voice that sent chills down Emma's spine, they spoke.
"Let's finish this."
