The weight of the world bore down on Emma's chest as the revelation from the previous night clawed at her every thought. She hadn't slept, tossing and turning as she tried to reconcile the truth—if it even was the truth—with everything she'd ever known. Her protector, who had fought to keep her alive, had hidden such vital secrets. The leader's dark words about her cursed power echoed in her mind, tainting every memory, every moment of her life.
Her power wasn't a gift. It was a curse. And she wasn't even supposed to have it.
The morning light that streamed through the window of the safe house felt foreign and intrusive, like a reminder that time continued its relentless march forward despite her crumbling reality. She couldn't stay here, not when everything felt so uncertain. The betrayal from those she trusted, the looming danger, and the questions of her identity gnawed at her soul. She needed real answers, not cryptic warnings from her enemies or half-truths from those who claimed to protect her.
Her protector—Cale—had recovered enough to sit up, though the wound from last night's attack still left him weak. His sharp eyes followed her every move as she paced the small room, her thoughts frantic. He had been her constant companion for so long, her guardian in the face of the unimaginable dangers that pursued them. But now, he was a mystery. She couldn't separate the man who had saved her countless times from the one who had kept such monumental secrets.
Finally, unable to bear the silence, Emma stopped pacing and turned to face him.
"Tell me the truth," she said, her voice trembling, but there was a steel in her tone that she didn't even recognize. "All of it, Cale. No more lies, no more half-explanations. What am I? Why is my power such a danger?"
Cale's eyes darkened, and for a moment, she saw something flicker in them—guilt, regret, something more. He slowly rose from the bed, wincing as he moved, and approached her with measured steps. His usually confident demeanour was shaken, and that only made Emma's heart race with fear. Whatever truth he had been hiding, it was terrible enough that even he hesitated to reveal it.
"You were never supposed to know," Cale began, his voice low, almost a whisper. "I wanted to protect you from this for as long as I could. But the truth is... it's not just your power that makes you dangerous. It's what you are."
Emma's stomach twisted painfully, dread crawling up her spine. "What do you mean? What am I, Cale?"
He closed his eyes, his face etched with a sadness that made Emma's throat tighten. When he spoke again, his words felt like an irrevocable shift in her life.
"You're not fully human, Emma," Cale said, his voice rough. "You're part of an ancient bloodline, something far older and more powerful than any of us could ever understand. Your power is connected to that bloodline, but it was never meant to be yours. It should have gone to someone else—someone who could control it."
Emma stumbled back, her mind reeling. Not fully human? The words made her want to scream, to deny everything. But somewhere deep inside her, it made a sick sort of sense. She had always felt different like something was off, but she had never let herself linger on those thoughts. Now, the truth was laid bare, and it felt like her world was splitting apart.
Cale stepped closer, his hands raised as if to comfort her, but Emma flinched away.
"You lied to me," she choked, tears pricking her eyes. "All this time, you knew what I was, and you didn't tell me. Why? Why would you hide something so important?"
Cale's jaw clenched, and he looked away, unable to meet her gaze. "Because I thought I could protect you from it. From them."
Emma shook her head, anger bubbling up alongside the hurt. "You thought you could control me, didn't you? Keep me in the dark so I wouldn't realize how dangerous I am—how dangerous I could be."
"It wasn't like that," Cale said, his voice strained. "I was trying to protect you from yourself."
His words hit her like a punch to the gut. Protect her from herself? The very idea was horrifying. Was she truly so dangerous? Had her power already started to consume her in ways she didn't even understand?
"I don't even know who I am anymore," Emma whispered, her voice breaking.
Cale's face softened, and he finally reached out, his hand brushing against her arm. Despite everything, the warmth of his touch sent a familiar shiver down her spine. There was something between them—something that went beyond duty or protection. Even now, standing in the middle of a fractured reality, that pull between them was undeniable.
But that didn't change the fact that he had lied to her.
"You're still you, Emma," Cale said, his voice barely above a whisper. "No matter what your bloodline is, no matter what power runs through your veins—you are still the same person I've protected all these years."
Emma shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks. "How can you say that? How can you look at me the same way when I don't even know what I'm capable of?"
Cale took a step closer, his hand slipping down to take hers. "Because I've seen your heart, Emma. I know who you are, deep down. And I believe in you."
His words, filled with such earnest conviction, cut through the storm of confusion raging inside her. For a moment, she let herself lean into that belief, let herself be held by the strength of his unwavering loyalty. She had always felt safe with Cale, and despite everything, she wanted to believe him now.
But the truth was still too heavy, too overwhelming.
Before she could respond, the air in the room shifted—an unsettling ripple that sent a cold shiver down Emma's spine. Both she and Cale tensed, their instincts sharpening in the face of the sudden change.
The door to the safe house burst open, and standing in the doorway was someone Emma had never expected to see again.
Her sister. The sister she had thought was dead for years.
"Lily?" Emma gasped, her voice barely audible.
But the woman standing in front of her was not the sister she remembered. There was something cold, calculating in her eyes—something dangerous.
Cale stepped protectively in front of Emma, his body a shield between her and the new threat. "What are you doing here?" he growled, his hand inching toward the knife at his belt.
Lily smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "I'm here for her, of course," she said smoothly, her eyes locking onto Emma. "It's time for her to know the full truth."
Emma's heart pounded in her chest, confusion and terror warring inside her. "What truth?"
Lily stepped forward, her eyes gleaming with something dark and twisted. "The truth about our family. About what we are."
Cale shifted, his muscles tensing, but Lily held up a hand, stopping him in his tracks with a mere gesture. "Don't even try it, Cale. You can't stop what's coming."
Emma's breath caught in her throat as her sister's words sunk in. What did she mean? What was this truth that she had been kept from for so long?
Lily's gaze softened slightly as she looked at Emma, but the warmth that Emma remembered from her childhood was gone. Replaced with something far more dangerous. "It's time to embrace who you are, Emma. The power you've been running from—it's not a curse. It's your destiny."
Emma's world spun out of control as she tried to process what was happening. Her sister was alive—standing right in front of her—and yet she felt like a stranger. And now, the weight of her words hung heavily in the air, suffocating Emma with the enormity of the truth she still didn't fully understand.
But one thing was clear: whatever was coming next, it was going to change everything.
