When Jax said he would never leave me alone, I didn't know serious he was.

He never left me alone. Ever.

"Jax," I said, pinching his cheek. "It's fine. It's just Kinger."

"Still," he insisted. "Let me walk you there."

That meant let me walk you there, stand behind you for half an hour, and whine when you take 'too long' before walking back to either of our rooms so we can cuddle.

Not that I was complaining.

We made it to Kinger's room. I knocked on the door nervously, my grip on the laptop tight as if my hand was a vice. Let's hope he likes it.

The door opened. "Hello! Come on in, come on in, come on in!"

Kinger ushered us inside, making us sit on the floor as not to damage anything in the room-including his large collection of insects. "Well!" he said, "What brings our lovely muse here today?"

I winced at the title but answered, "I owed you a song. I hope you still want it."

"Of course! Let me have a listen."

I shifted from side to side, fidgeting in my spot on the ground. I hadn't shown anybody the project before today, which made me uneasy. I opened the laptop, taking a deep breath to calm down before pressing play.

The orchestra and flute solo began to play as a melody permeated the room. It was bright, sweet, and lovely-like a stroll with someone in a meadow on a sunny day. The piano trickled in slowly, adding soothing background notes before everything came to a halt with an aggressive chord. The chords gradually turned gloomier. Lower-registered instruments like the bassoon, cello, and double bass start to fill the sound, producing a more violent tone.

The flute came back in, doing a low C to C# trill as everything went silent. It started a minor scale up until a clarinet joined in, then a violin, and an oboe, and finally the whole orchestra played the grandest portion of the song. Trumpets blared high notes as the flute worked to join the chord at the top. The cello played a grand but melancholy melody as consisting of complicated 16th note patterns.

The world seemed to stop again as the flute joined back in, playing a similar melody as the one in the beginning. The piano chimed in with chords as the flute started to play in minor, holding out a note and tapering it.

The recording stopped.

I looked at Kinger to see his reaction to the song. He was standing, hardly moving an inch. I glanced at him, then back at Jax, then at Kinger again, worried.

I chewed my lip nervously. "Was it goo-"

"(Y/n)," Kinger said, voice fill of emotion. "My dear, sweet, graceful muse, that was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard." Kinger tried stifling his sobs but failed, letting tears slip past his eyelids one by one until a river flowed out of his eyes.

I smiled, proud that he liked my work as I hugged him, rubbing the king's robe soothingly as I tried to stop him from crying. "I'll let you keep the song," I said. "I'll have Caine make you a copy on a CD or something."

Kinger sniffed as he agreed.

Jax wiped a tear from his eye from (y/n)'s music. The song uncovered deep emotions he didn't even know he had inside of him. Smiling, he watched as she hugged the sobbing chess piece, comforting him to the best of her ability. She looked so proud of her work and so delighted to make others happy. Jax smiled at the love he felt for her.

I won't mess this up, Jax promised himself. I won't be jealous, or inconsiderate, or just a plain asshole. I'll show her that I can make her happy. Anything to make her happy.

He wouldn't get jealous again. He wouldn't be mean again.

He wouldn't be a bully again.

"Gangle!" I ran up to the masked girl, stopping right before her to give her a gentle hug. Gangle was such an angel-I had literally no idea why Jax used to pick on her so often.

"(Y/n)!" Gangle hugged me back gently, a small smile on her face. "I haven't talked to you in a while! How did it go with Kinger?"

"Really well, actually. He loved the song. Want to hear it?"

I could hear Jax whining that he wanted cuddles, but I ignored him. She agreed and I replayed the track another time. Gangle tilted her head cutely and listened intently, smiling at the piece.

"(Y/n), that is so astonishing and what? You're so good at this?" Gangle was practically fangirling over the song by the time she was done listening to it.

I blushed a bit. "It's not that good... Is it?"

"Your music has power, (y/n). Of course you're good at this," Jax joined in.

Gangle finally noticed Jax. "Oh," she said in a small voice. "You made up with him?"

"Yeah," I said, frowning at Jax. "Why? Did he start bullying you again?"

"No," she said, declining that notion immediately. "It's just... memories. Bad memories."

I gave Jax a small glare, like look at what you did. Turning back to Gangle, I gave her an apologetic smile. "Sor-"

"I'm sorry, Gangle."

I perked up in suprise, waiting for him to continue.

Jax's shoulders dropped as he lowered his head. "I was a big jerk to you-as I was to everyone, but to you especially. I did far more than necessary. I've broken your mask far too often and found you annoying when you're actually a pretty nice person to talk to. You've kept (y/n) company while I annoyed the #$&! out of her. I'm grateful for that and I'm sorry."

Gangle looked up at him, shock visible on her animated face. "Wow. I didn't expect... Thank you?"

"Just say it, Gangle," he said. "I won't... reprimand you for it." At this, he visibly winced.

"You better not," I muttered. Jax gave me a small smile while shoving me slightly.

"The memories are still there, you know?" Gangle fiddled with her ribbon-hands. "What you did isn't going to disappear in one apology, but keep it up, you're doing a great job. You haven't bullying me at all recently, so maybe it'll get better? Just keep trying and it'll pay off."

At this, Jax rapidly started nodding. "Yes!" He cleared his throat. "Yes, I can do that. Thank you so much."
