"Today is a simple game of tag!"
Ain't no way, I thought. No way Caine just wanted us to run around and play a children's game without some deadly modifications or tricks.
Everyone in the circus side-eyed each other, seemingly thinking the same thing. "That's it?" Zooble asked.
"Of course!" Caine said. "I didn't plan anything today, so all of you might as well have some fun!"
Pomni's eyes widened before a small smile appeared on her face. "So... who's it?"
"Not it!" Jax yelled, ducking down and placing a finger where his nose would be. People quickly started to follow his example until only Ragatha stood, clueless.
"What?"
"Even Kinger beat you," Jax said, shaking his head. "Come on, Raggedy Ann."
"You're it," Gangle supplied to the Ragatha who looked like a deer in headlight with how confused she was.
"Okay?" Ragatha tagged Zooble next to her. "Tag!"
And the game started.
Everyone dispersed in different directions. I sprinted with my flute as the bright wall colors seemed to zoom by. My legs were burning with how fast I sprinted. Soon I was alone, panting as I stood outside the circus near the lake.
'H-hey mousie.'
Not this guy again.
Slowly I turned around, cradling my flute as I stepped back. I was near a tree by the lake, too far to run back to the circus. I looked back, but I couldn't see anyone in my vicinity.
Shit.
The whoosh of a blade prompted me to collapse on the floor, narrowly ducking a swing from Nico's katana. I scrambled to get up as the white cat gave me that stupid smirk.
'Was that ga-ame of tag fun? Because no-ow you have multiple taggers to ru-un from.'
"Nope," I muttered. "Not fun anymore."
I kept trying to duck and dodge all the swings that Nico threw at me, but it soon became futile as a large gash formed under my arm. I stumbled, clutching my side in pain as dots swam in my vision.
And I booked it.
I sprinted as fast as I could, trying to put some distance between the cat and I. I hissed in pain as I felt my body overextending itself but right now, I could care less.
He was catching up quickly so I put the flute to my lips and played a small piece of the song I gave to Kinger—making sure I played the melancholic part and not the happy one. I willed for someone, anyone to show up.
Tears streamed from my eyes as the tip of his blade caught my side, leaving a large gash. I clutched my body and kept running as fast as I could.
"(Y/n)!" I heard someone yell.
"Jax! Over here!" I ducked a swing from Nico, trying to shove the cat off of me. I dropped the flute and clutched my side with now bloody hands. "Help!"
Jax's wild eyes scanned the view before landing on the white cat. "You," he growled. "Cat dickhead. Get your hands off my girl."
Damn, okay? Possessive but I like it.
Within seconds, Jax had tackled Neko and taken his katana, slashing it down at the cat. I internally hoped that the cat would just die, but he disappeared into black smoke instead, reforming behind Jax.
