News had spread that Kang Taehyun, the CEO of South Korea's leading IT support company, was visiting to discuss a potential partnership. He was known for his sharp intellect and charismatic personality, and many were eager to make an impression.
As Jungwon settled into his desk, Heeseung appeared unusually tense. He was usually composed, but today, his brow was furrowed as he glanced at the clock, waiting for Taehyun's arrival.
"Do you think he'll show up on time?" Heeseung muttered, half to himself.
"I'm sure he will," Jungwon replied, trying to ease the tension. "He's a busy man, right?"
"Busy or not, he's never late for a deal," Heeseung snapped, though there was a hint of concern behind his words.
Moments later, the office door swung open, and Taehyun strode in, exuding an effortless charm that lit up the room. His tailored suit, disarming smile, and air of confidence turned heads. "Heeseung! It's good to see you," he said, extending a hand.
Heeseung shook it, though Jungwon could sense a flicker of irritation beneath the surface. "Thanks for coming, Taehyun. Let's get to it."
"Of course," Taehyun replied, then turned his attention to Jungwon. "And who do we have here?" His eyes sparkled with curiosity.
"This is Jungwon, my assistant," Heeseung said, his tone brisk.
Jungwon felt a wave of warmth as Taehyun smiled at him. "Nice to meet you, Jungwon! I've heard some good things. How are you finding the job?"
"It's challenging, but I'm learning a lot," Jungwon replied, trying to match Taehyun's enthusiasm.
"Learning is the best part! Heeseung here can be quite the taskmaster," Taehyun said, grinning as he shot a playful glance at Heeseung. "But it sounds like you're holding your own."
"I'm trying to keep up," Jungwon said, a little flustered by Taehyun's easy manner.
"Good to hear!" Taehyun continued, clearly enjoying the banter. "So, tell me, what do you think of the company so far? Any insights?"
Before Jungwon could answer, Heeseung interjected, his voice firm. "Let's focus on the meeting agenda, Taehyun."
But Taehyun was undeterred, leaning closer to Jungwon. "Come on, I'm genuinely curious. You're working directly with Heeseung; you must have a unique perspective."
Jungwon glanced at Heeseung, who was visibly annoyed, his jaw clenched. "It's been... enlightening," Jungwon said cautiously. "There's a lot to take in."
"I bet! Heeseung can be intense, but he's also brilliant," Taehyun said, flashing another charming smile. "What's your take on his management style?"
"He's demanding," Jungwon said, trying to gauge Heeseung's reaction. "But I appreciate that he pushes me to be better."
Taehyun laughed heartily. "That's the spirit! You might just be the right fit for this place."
Just then, the office door swung open again, and Wonyoung stepped in, her demeanor professional but her eyes narrowing as she took in the scene. "What's this? A party without me?" she remarked, her tone laced with mock surprise.
"Wonyoung, perfect timing!" Taehyun exclaimed, turning toward her with an infectious grin. "I was just getting to know your future star assistant here."
Wonyoung's smile faltered as she caught sight of Jungwon. "Oh, is that right? I didn't realize we had a new favorite in the office." Her tone was sweet, but the edge was unmistakable.
Jungwon felt the tension spike. "I'm just doing my best," he said, trying to sound lighthearted.
"He's doing a great job," Taehyun said, his focus still on Jungwon. "Heeseung is lucky to have him on his team."
Heeseung's irritation bubbled to the surface. "Taehyun, can we focus on the collaboration we're here to discuss? I'd rather not make this a personal interview for my assistant."
"Easy, Heeseung. I'm just trying to know more about the talent that's in your corner," Taehyun replied, hands raised in mock surrender. "Besides, it's not every day I meet someone who manages to survive under your reign."
Wonyoung crossed her arms, her expression turning icy. "If Jungwon is such a 'talent,' I hope he knows how to handle the pressure of working with both of you," she said, her eyes flicking between them. "After all, the stakes are high here."
"He'll be fine," Heeseung said, his tone firm. "Right, Jungwon?"
"Absolutely," Jungwon replied, trying to keep the atmosphere from escalating.
Taehyun seemed unfazed, leaning closer to Jungwon again. "So, how long have you been with Heeseung?" he asked, genuinely interested.
"Just a few days," Jungwon replied, trying to remain composed under the scrutiny of both Wonyoung and Heeseung.
"Seems like you're making quite the impression already. Heeseung doesn't let just anyone into his inner circle," Taehyun remarked, glancing at Heeseung, who looked increasingly annoyed.
"Let's not make this about favoritism, Taehyun," Wonyoung interjected sharply. "Heeseung has a reputation to uphold, and I wouldn't want Jungwon to get the wrong idea."
"Right," Jungwon said, feeling cornered. "I'm just focused on doing my job."
"Trust me, that's all you need to do. Just be yourself," Taehyun said, flashing another charming smile. "I'd hate to see Heeseung lose someone as capable as you."
Jungwon felt a rush of conflicting emotions. Part of him appreciated Taehyun's friendliness, while another part felt uncomfortable with how it irritated Heeseung.
As the meeting resumed, Jungwon took notes, trying to focus on the discussion at hand. Taehyun and Heeseung dove into a spirited debate about technology trends and market strategies, but Jungwon couldn't shake the feeling that Taehyun's attention lingered on him more than necessary.
After the meeting concluded, Taehyun clapped Heeseung on the shoulder. "Let's grab lunch sometime, just the three of us. I'd love to hear more about your plans—and maybe some more about your amazing assistant here," he said, directing a playful wink at Jungwon.
Heeseung's jaw tightened. "We'll see about that," he replied coolly, shooting Taehyun a glare that promised a challenge.
As Taehyun left, Wonyoung lingered, her gaze sharp. "You know, Taehyun likes to play games. Don't let him distract you, Jungwon. This is a serious business environment, and your performance matters," she said, her tone bordering on condescending.
"I understand," Jungwon replied, trying to maintain his composure.
Wonyoung turned to Heeseung, her expression shifting to one of subtle calculation. "Just remember, Heeseung, it's not just about business; it's also about how you manage your team. You don't want any loose ends."
With that, she exited, leaving the tension in the room thick enough to cut with a knife. Jungwon felt the weight of expectation settle heavily on his shoulders.
"You okay?" Jungwon asked Heeseung, who was staring at the door, deep in thought.
"Yeah, just... keep your distance from Taehyun and Wonyoung," Heeseung said, his voice sharper than intended. "They can be distractions, and I don't need that right now."
"Got it," Jungwon replied, a mix of confusion and frustration stirring within him. "But Taehyun seems friendly enough. I thought it was just small talk."
"Small talk or not, don't let them get too comfortable," Heeseung replied, his eyes narrowed. "Focus on your work, and don't worry about what others think."
Jungwon nodded, realizing that Heeseung's protectiveness was more complicated than he hadinitially thought. He couldn't help but feel that this rivalry—whether personalor professional—was only just beginning. The dynamic between them was shifting, and he was right in the middle of it all, ready to navigate the twists andturns ahead.
