As the days passed, Jungwon settled into a routine at Lee Group, but the buzz around him only seemed to grow. Taehyun had taken a particular interest in his work, dropping by the office frequently to check in and offer encouragement. Each time he visited, Heeseung found himself watching from a distance, a knot of unease tightening in his stomach.
On this particular day, Jungwon was at his desk, flipping through the pages of his new leather notebook. The vibrant cover gleamed under the office lights, and he couldn't help but smile every time he picked it up. Taehyun had stopped by earlier to discuss a new project, and Jungwon felt invigorated by the collaboration.
Just as he was jotting down some notes, he noticed Taehyun approaching again, a casual air about him. "Hey, Jungwon! How's everything going?" he asked, leaning against Jungwon's desk with that easy charm that always drew attention.
"Pretty well! I'm making progress on the proposal," Jungwon replied, feeling a sense of pride in his work.
"Great! I'm excited to see what you come up with," Taehyun said, his gaze warm and encouraging.
From across the room, Heeseung sat in his office, his expression unreadable as he watched the exchange. He couldn't shake the feeling of annoyance creeping in each time Taehyun approached Jungwon. What was it about the guy that made Jungwon light up?
"Why does he keep coming here?" Heeseung muttered under his breath, crossing his arms as he leaned back in his chair. He felt ridiculous for being so affected by it. They were just friends, right? Yet, he couldn't help but feel a surge of jealousy whenever he saw them together.
"Hey, Heeseung," Wonyoung said as she strolled past his office, noticing his distracted gaze. She leaned against the doorframe, a playful smile on her lips. "You look like you've eaten something sour. What's up?"
"Nothing," he replied sharply, though his tone betrayed him.
"Right," she said, her smile widening. "I can see that you're trying really hard not to care about Jungwon's little fan club over there."
Heeseung's jaw tightened. "I'm aware of what's happening."
Wonyoung stepped closer, her tone teasing. "Jealous, are we? I mean, it's understandable. Jungwon is pretty cute when he's excited about his work."
"I'm not jealous," Heeseung shot back defensively, though he couldn't quite hide the irritation simmering just beneath the surface.
"Oh, come on," Wonyoung said, batting her eyelashes playfully. "It's okay to feel something. You're not made of stone, you know. Maybe you actually like him?"
"Don't be ridiculous," Heeseung replied, trying to maintain his composure.
"Ridiculous? You're practically scowling every time Taehyun shows up," Wonyoung teased, leaning in slightly, her voice low and conspiratorial. "Admit it, Heeseung. You care."
"Why would I care what he does?" Heeseung insisted, crossing his arms. But even he could hear the weakness in his argument.
Wonyoung smirked, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "You know, if you wanted to make him notice you, maybe you could be a bit more... charming. You have your own appeal, after all."
"I don't need charm," Heeseung replied, rolling his eyes, but the hint of a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
"Sure, keep telling yourself that," Wonyoung said, stepping back with a playful flick of her hair. "But if you let Taehyun keep stealing the spotlight, you might just lose out on something special."
Heeseung frowned, his mind racing. The thought of Jungwon being swayed by Taehyun's attention gnawed at him, but Wonyoung's words lingered in his mind.
Just then, Taehyun appeared again, playfully ruffling Jungwon's hair as he leaned over the desk to look at his notes. "This looks great! I knew you could do it!"
Jungwon laughed, brushing his hair back. "Thanks! I'm just trying to get everything organized for the meeting."
Watching from his office, Heeseung felt a pang of irritation mixed with something deeper—concern. Jungwon was talented, dedicated, and hardworking. Did he really want Taehyun's attention to overshadow that?
"I'll be back later to check on your progress," Taehyun said, giving Jungwon a thumbs-up before walking away, a confident stride in his step.
As he left, Heeseung felt his irritation spike. Why did Taehyun feel the need to drop by every single day? It was as if he was trying to stake a claim on Jungwon's time and attention. Heeseung gritted his teeth, forcing himself to focus on his own work.
"Maybe you should talk to him," Wonyoung suggested, her tone suddenly serious. "Let him know he's appreciated. You might just surprise yourself."
"Why do you care so much?" Heeseung asked, caught off guard by her sudden shift.
"Because," Wonyoung said, leaning in slightly, her voice lowering, "I see how you look at him. And it's not just as a boss. I think you should take a chance—before someone else does."
Heeseung opened his mouth to respond, but the words caught in his throat. Could he really be feeling something more than just protectiveness? The idea unsettled him.
As Jungwon popped his head into Heeseung's office, a bright smile on his face, Heeseung forced himself to push those thoughts aside. "Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I'm making some good progress on the proposal for next week."
"Good," Heeseung replied, trying to maintain a neutral tone. "I expect great results."
"Of course!" Jungwon said, his enthusiasm infectious. "I'll make sure to keep you updated."
As Jungwon walked back to his desk, Heeseung couldn't help but watch him, an unsettling mixture of pride and possessiveness welling up inside him. With Wonyoung's encouragement echoing in his mind, Heeseung knew he had to make a decision soon.
Maybe it was time to confront his feelings head-on. Whether he liked it or not, he needed to show Jungwon that he appreciated him—not just as an assistant, but as someone worth acknowledging in his own right.
And maybe, just maybe,he could do that without letting Taehyun's presence overshadow what they werebuilding together.
