I hear the gate opening then my parent’s car drives into the garage. I look around the kitchen and everything is perfect. I did as she asked and more so there’s nothing she can complain about. All I’m waiting for now is to plate for them, wash the dishes then go to my room, bath and sleep. I eat after they have eaten in my room because when I was kicked out of the house, my father made it perfectly clear that he was never going to sit or eat on the same table as me.

Sometimes I wish my mother would stand up for me and fight for me but she never does because she will never go against anything my father says, no matter how hurtful he is towards me. To him I don’t exist, he has three children only and I’m not one of them. I do hope that one day he will find it in his heart to forgive me for disappointing him.

They walk in hand in hand as always and my mother is laughing at something my father has said to her. They love each other very much and I have never seen them arguing. Maybe it’s because my mother will never go against her husband. I greet them and they just nod and pass me. Nolo runs to her grandparents, my father picks her up and spins her around. She giggles then they disappear as she starts telling them about how her dad left her.

My sister walks in after a while. She looks at me once then goes to her bedroom. Her eyes were red like she was crying. God, I hope nothing is wrong with Kelly. I head to the dining and start to set up the table. I can hear my sister crying and she’s also telling them whatever happened and I get more worried because it means that something bad really happened to her or Kelly. It gets quiet after a while then I hear my mother calling my father’s name.

I hear footsteps like someone is running then he walks in and heads towards me and he is furious. I stand there frozen and scared because I do not know what is happening. My mother and sister run in, I look at my father about to ask him what is going on when I see a fist then it connects with my eye. I fall down, breaking the plate that I had and see starts but he doesn’t stop there. He punches me again on my face then I get kicked over and over again, I hide my face so he won’t kick me there again.

I get called sorts of names, slut, home wrecker, jealous and all sorts of names you can think of. I just lay there and take it because he’s not going to stop until he wants to stop. All I can do is apologize for whatever that I did while crying because I have no idea why I am being beaten up.  A scream from Nolo finally stops my father. My God. Why couldn’t they make sure that she doesn’t see this?

“I want you to pack your bags and out of my house. I am tired of you. All you do is just bring trouble to us. Why did you do it?” He roared.

What did I do? I have no idea. I lie down still covering my face. “Maya, just answer your father, please.”

“I don’t know what I did mama, I honestly don’t.” I try to speak although my nose is bloody and my face hurts.

“How dare you lie! How could you do this to me Maya. You’re my sister for God’s sake!” Emily is mad as hell and I still don’t know what I did.

“What did I do, Emily? Please tell me because I don’t know.” I try to get up but my whole body hurts. I can hear Nolo crying in her bedroom.

“Are you serious? Then tell me what this is?”

She plays a recording of me and Stan. I listen to it and I realise that Gift recorded us. He was outside while I was talking to Stan but the recording is missing some parts of the conversation. It was altered like Stan was propositioning me and I agreed. How could Gift do this to me, turn something innocent to something like this. Like I am having an affair with my sister’s boyfriend?
