Chapter 38 : My mistake

Narrator POV:

The awkward silence that followed Catras recognitional statement was palpable but not for long when Amber, the 20 something beauty, enthusiastically hugged the hybrid. At this point, Lauren and Tera had started to talk outside and Lonnie was busy trying to wake up Kyle from his drunken stupor, with Rogelio helping her. None of the others paid much attention to what was happening right now.

"IT'S BEEN YEARS! How have you been? Good?"

"I... hmm.. yeah, fine..." she muttered, averting her gaze and trying to get out of the sudden and unexpected skinship

"Who is that?" Adora asked, her mood still sour from the guy that had insulted Catra just minutes ago

"umm... that.."

"Hi, I'm Amber Moray. Catra and I knew each other in high school. We were good friends" Amber said, stepping away from Catra while her face radiated pure innocence and happiness.

"Friends my ass... but I guess, from her perspective, that's all we ever were" Catra thought but bit her tongue. Adora however, noticed her Girlfriends sudden and severe mood change and squeezed her hand

"Whoever you are, if you can cause Catra to make this face, you ain't no friend"

"Say, why did you drop out from High school? When our second term started, you were suddenly gone and never called me again"

"...Family reasons" was all she got out when a large guy walked up behind them and laid his arm around Amber

"Hey babe. Got us some drinks... what are you doing?"

"Hey honey bear, I just met an old friend and chatted with her"

"Honey... why do I suddenly feel like vomiting?" Adora wondered but tried to smile

"Oh right... This is Steve, my Boyfriend. He works as an engineer at BWT" she explained, looking somehow smug and expecting a retort

"Who asked and who cares?" Catra wondered, seeing the desperate need to gloat in her ex's eyes and without a second of hesitation, she took the bait "Happy to meet you. This is Adora, my Girlfriend... she studies Law" she said, believing to have won... something, in her mind.

"Gir... oh" Amber muttered, all the liveliness and smiles suddenly vanishing from her face "H..hey.."

"Hi, I'm sorry but it's late and we were just on our way out so have a nice evening" Adora said, holding Catras hand and walking out without waiting for an answer.

Outside, they walked right past Lauren and Tera who noticed them leaving "Hey Catra, great show tonight. I'm gonna call you if we have another offer"

"T-thanks again for inviting me" Tera added, waving politely but Adora and Catra both just waved wordlessly until they were at Adoras Car and both got in. The blonde was still sober, since she knew she would have to drive.

"Wanna explain?" Adora asked

"...no but you want to know, right?" Adora nodded, turning to her "...Amber and I dated in high school... or at least I thought so.."

"How can... you know what? We are going to talk at home, okay" Catra nodded

"We both have something to explain"

Meanwhile, at the Bar

Lonnie and Rogellio had left with a passed out Kyle and Amber was staring at her drink. She remembered Catra very well and missed her when she left abruptly back then, leaving her without a clear cut end to their friendship.
