Elijah crossed his arms, his frown deepening as he processed what his brother had just said.
"A trip?" Elijah repeated, disbelief coloring his voice.
"Yes, brother," Klaus replied calmly. "The women want to take some time away, and, surprisingly, I find myself in agreement." He paused, studying Elijah's skeptical expression. "It's not just for their sake; I believe we could all use a bit of respite from this madness."
Elijah's jaw clenched. "Niklaus, we cannot afford to be complacent. Lucien could strike at any moment. We must focus and strategize. With each passing day we delay, his power only intensifies."
"I know that," Klaus said, his tone serious yet soft. "But if we persist in this state—constantly on edge, sleep-deprived, making decisions from a place of fear—we're no better than the fools who think they can outrun the storm. A short break, clear heads... we'll return sharper, and ready to execute a better plan."
He stepped closer, resting a hand on Elijah's shoulder, the gesture both brotherly and persuasive. "We need this. Our family, our women... they need this."
Elijah's sharp eyes flickered with hesitation. He glanced past Klaus, considering the toll that the relentless battle with Lucien had taken on them all. He could feel the exhaustion in his bones, the strain pulling at him with every passing day. Bonnie, Rebekah, Lucy—they were all fighting too, bearing the burden alongside them.
Elijah let out a sigh, heavy with the weight of responsibility. "A trip would be... beneficial," he admitted quietly. "But only for a few days, Niklaus. Once we return, we must deal with Lucien immediately."
Klaus's lips curved into a small, satisfied smile. "Of course. Just a few days."
"Who shall keep a vigilant watch over Lucien in our absence?" Elijah asked, always practical, even in his moments of agreement.
"I've had a word with Aiden," Klaus explained. "He'll keep his wolves on high alert. Diego's managing the vampires, and Vincent will continue his research. Rest assured, everything will remain under control."
Elijah raised a brow. "No one can know we've gone on this vacation, Niklaus. We cannot risk it."
"They won't," Klaus assured him. "Vincent's the only one who knows the truth. The others remain blissfully unaware, believing we're off to Mystic Falls for some trivial business."
A thoughtful silence stretched between them as Elijah considered this. He nodded, satisfied. "Good."
Klaus's eyes gleamed with a sense of victory, but he tempered it, knowing his brother's nature. "So," he said, his tone lightening, "where shall we go, brother?"
Elijah rubbed his chin, deep in thought. "How about Florida? We have a residence near the beach. The weather is quite pleasant this time of year, and it offers the seclusion we need to remain under the radar"
Klaus nodded approvingly. "Florida it is. Sun, sand, and no interruptions. Just what we need."
For the first time in weeks, a faint smile tugged at the corners of Elijah's mouth. "A few days in Florida, then. But once we return..."
"We take Lucien down," Klaus finished for him, his voice carrying the weight of their unspoken promise.
Elijah nodded, his resolve solidifying. "I'll inform the others." He turned to leave, already making plans in his mind, but Klaus's voice stopped him.
"Elijah," Klaus called after him, his tone unusually soft.
Elijah glanced over his shoulder. "Yes, Niklaus?"
